Teen, 16, held for hijacking

2011-07-13 14:06

Johannesburg - A teenager has been arrested for trying to hijack a taxi driver near New Brighton, in the Eastern Cape, police said on Wednesday.

"The 16-year-old and two men boarded a maxi taxi on the street in KwaNobuhle on Monday evening," said Lieutenant-Colonel Priscilla Naidu.

She said one of the men, who was in the back seat, pointed a gun at the driver, while the other held a knife to his neck.

"The man with the knife tried to stab the driver, but he fought back and this resulted in a scuffle. The driver lost control of the vehicle and it crashed into a fence."

The two men, both in their early 20s, got out of the car and fled. The driver held onto the teenager until passersby came to his aid and called the police.

The youth would appear in the KwaNobuhle Magistrate's Court on Thursday on a charge of armed robbery, Naidu said.

10 lashes every 20 minutes for 3 days...that should do the trick !

      jowza - 2011-07-13 14:39

hope he is tried as an adult and not a juvenile

      Daniël - 2011-07-13 15:16

Where do you come from? The picture is clear your parent abused you and now you want the same for others. The only thing about lashing anybody is that it will eventualy cause more violence!

That 16 year is a young man with possibilities and at an age where he can easily be re-abilitated and could surprise you all. He is a child of Africa and should be given our time and patience, the youth is your answer to a better SA or a worse SA - and nurturing a generation of leaders is a tough job. Its got nothing to do with anyones religion or generalisations of how he should be tried - give this man a chance and he will return the favour when you're old - take away that chance and he will attack you when you're old and expecting peace in that age - this is serious my friends!!!

      Made_In_SA - 2011-07-13 15:38

He had his chance and he fluffed mate,a dose of severe punishment and he will learn society has boundaries and rules... break them and you get punished, all this bleeding heart liberal cr@p about rehabilitation and second chances is load of's because of this powder puff mentality we have the high crime levels there is NO consequence to criminal behavior so criminals run a muck and you now want to give them all second chances? I wonder if you would feel the same if they raped or murdered your mother or daughter? Brain farts are dangerous!

      SpiceInc - 2011-07-13 15:39

I’d love to see if you’d be as kind if this delinquent had committed a criminal act against your family! I’ve recently come of an incident which involved my mother who was stabbed by the same sort who goes in and out of jail to parental care because he’s ‘not old enough’ to serve time in jail. When does it end? There’s a difference between someone who steals oranges from the garden and someone who pulls a knife to someone! Quite frankly I am still asking myself what is stopping me from taking this up with the state because everyone knows this brat is a menace to society yet they still let him free at the care of his parents whom, if they had done their jobs right we wouldn’t be having this problem! We were all at some point teenagers who often veered off course but no matter how far we strayed because we had good grounding we always knew there we limits and we went back to the straight and narrow! If it was possible I’d say shoot him now to save us all the trouble later!

I had an attempted hi-jack on Monday, the police was there, but just looked the other way. Well done to the driver, and the passersby (and the police) for catching this guy! It's not as easy to keep head in that type of situation.

  • Barry - 2011-07-13 17:14

He must be tried as an adult.
