Cape Town - A teenager caught breaking in to a policeman’s house could be linked to a number of burglaries committed around the Hazyview, Mpumalanga area, police said on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old suspect appeared in the Masoyi Periodical Court earlier on Wednesday after being caught in the ceiling of the officer’s house on Tuesday, police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said in a statement.

The arrest came after a tip-off led police to the officer’s home.

The policeman had been on duty at the time of the break-in.

“The men in blue rushed to the house and began a search. [The suspect] was found in possession of a 9mm Norinco pistol, belonging to the police official, which he had already stolen from the safe,” he said.

“In addition, the suspect was found in possession of a laptop and cellphones, which were also suspected to have been stolen.”

He faces charges of burglary, possession of suspected stolen property as well as unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, Mohlala said.

“The police, who were at the scene, were quick to identify that the suspect was… wanted for burglaries committed in Hazyview, as he was previously identified through his fingerprints.”

“Profiling is under way to discover the suspect’s involvement in other crimes.

He is also expected to appear before the court soon regarding the burglary cases in Hazyview,” Mohlala said.
