Johannesburg - A high school pupil has discovered the body of a drowned man in the Mpenduza River in Gcuwa (Butterworth), Eastern Cape police said on Thursday.

The 16-year-old boy was returning from school when he saw the man's hand in the water, said Captain Jackson Manatha.

The man was identified as 35-year-old Macebo Baleni.

Manatha said the area had experienced floods as a result of recent heavy rainfall. It was suspected that the man underestimated the strength of the river and was swept away.

An inquest docket had been opened.
