Johannesburg - A 14-year-old boy accused of hacking family members to death appeared in the Daveyton Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said.

The matter was postponed to 26 September for further investigation and for a post mortem report to be finalised, said spokesperson Medupe Simasiku.

The teenager allegedly used an axe to kill his mother, 42, and two siblings, aged 7 and 3-months-old, on 24 May at Etwatwa on the East Rand.

His grandmother was injured in the attack and admitted to the Far East Rand Hospital, where she died on 5 July.

The teenager's two other siblings, aged 8 and 9, escaped and alerted neighbours.

He fled the scene, but was later arrested and charged.
