Teen sees fire go over dad 'like a wave'

Johannesburg - A 16-year-old girl could only watch as her father burnt to death as they fought a veld fire on their farm in Tzaneen.

Anicka Brandt was helping her father, Thinus, fight a veld fire on their farm when the flames turned against him and he was unable to get away, reported Beeld.

Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said the farmer drove towards the fire on his tractor and tried to put out the flames with water, but the wind was too strong.

“The flames weren’t so bad and could’ve been put out but it was the wind that made it worse,” said Thinus’s wife, Ansie.

She said her daughter told her that her husband had got down from the tractor when he saw the flames coming towards him.

“But it was too late. My daughter said the fire went over him like a wave,” she said.

The teen was given a sedative and her mother sadly noted that she wished her daughter had not seen her father burn to death.

Devastating veld fires have been raging in the Tzaneen area in Limpopo since last week.

@Michael - Judging by the amount of fires in the area the fire brigade might have been spread a bit thin. Also judging by the story it would appear that the fire was intially managable and suddely sprung up when the wind picked up. I have seen how a seemingly small veld fire can flare up in seconds if the wind picks up. I was fortunate that the wind was from my back (not backside:))

@michael....... I'll second klippies's comment - really dumb comment. I'm a city girl but even I can comprehend the scale of the fire and the fact that is was on open farmlands. This was no dumb accident by any means of the imagination! - 2012-08-13 11:34

@michael - Correction - dumb people make dumb comments. You obviously have no idea as to the realities of such situations, do you? Any idea how long it will take the fire brigade to respond, considering this is out on a farm? Any idea how fast a fire can advance, destroying grazing/crops/livestock/infrastructure on a farm? Keep your crap comments to yourself a$$hole, a young girl lost her father, a family lost their provider, and the country lost a food producer. RIP, Thinus Brandt.

Dumb comments should not be deleted. They should be left on the forum for all the users to see who the idiots are amongst us.

To witness your father's death and know that you can't help him at all goes beyond tragic. My condolences to the family, may you find strength to comfort each other at this very sad time :( R.I.P.

Tefo this is not a joke. A father of a little girl is no more, now she has to grow up without him.

Michael - WHAT fire department. remember this is SA. Dont waste time calling Police, fire or ambulance, if you get an answer, they probably wont have a vehicle to send out. - 2012-08-13 11:36

Ja eish sorry man bra, we cannot send a truck out to help cos all the brass and copper hose fitting they have been stolen off the fire engine boss....

Hey Dawn, not sure how things are where you live but where I live (Helderberg) the Fire department is top notch.

klippies - i am in no way dissing the departments themselves. they do a great job when they have the resources. unfortunately they do not have the support they need and deserve.
