Teens denied bail over orphan murders

2013-01-26 08:12

Johannesburg - Six teenagers accused of killing three children were denied bail by the Mookgopong Magistrate's Court on Friday, Limpopo police said.

"The six will be taken back to a place of safety," said Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

They are aged between 12 and 14.

The matter was postponed to 1 February.

The group allegedly killed 9-year-old Bafana Kekana, his brother Hosea Kekana, 10, and their cousin Johanna Kekana, 12, in August last year.

The three lived at the Montadi Youth Care Centre. They were found stoned to death.

Their hands and feet had been bound with shoelaces. Johanna had been raped before being killed.

After reading N24, I am ashamed to say something this terrible just sounds normal to me. Our country. What is happening to you?

      colin.taylor.9883 - 2013-01-26 08:41

I agree Jeeves, we have become so desensitized by this type of tragedy as it has become clear that our justice system doesn't have the balls to hand out proper punishment to these sick criminals. And that's putting mildly.

      freddie.l.roux - 2013-01-26 10:34

@ Colin. I'm not sure I follow. What does the justice system have to do with 12 -14 year olds murdering and raping younger children? This is a social ill of South Africa owing to our violent past and present. You can have the best justice system in the world but with unemployment, a failing education system and corruption you'll have to keep building prisons to lock-up all the criminals in a never ending cycle. These kids did these things partly because as you say we've become desensitized as a country and society. Look at the school shootings in the USA.

      helen.stephens.1257 - 2013-01-26 10:39

Comrade.mg is clearly a cognitively challended creature. Those six beasts should be done away with, removed from this planet.

      moriri.mosweu - 2013-01-26 11:07

I understand their father is kotze.

      Flippncool - 2013-01-26 12:40

These kids should be shot, having committed this crime they will never be able to integrate back into society.

      jannie.beirowski - 2013-01-26 14:59

The children follow the example set by their leaders. No punishment, not even a bad look is allowed and the leaders, the ANC has the same motto: A(bsolutely) N(o) C(onsequence). For every one member of our government that was punished for doing wrong, albeit theft, rape, corruption or even murder, I will point out ten members that may have been transferred, or re-appointed in a more senior position after having been accused of such crimes, but no serious consequence for the wrongs they did commit.

      charles.robbie - 2013-01-26 20:43

And Freddie...the majority of the school shootings in the USA are committed by...?????

      pierre.devilliers.9231 - 2013-01-27 06:08

These kinds of crimes are terrible sick. The sad part is I don't think South Africa have now or ever had in the past the means to rehabilitate kids like these. They will go to some horrific school/prison where by brutal treatment they will be turned into hardened adult criminals and then released into society. But for those trying to justify Apartheid and believe this never happened under Apartheid, think again. The brutality in society was mostly swept under the carpet during the Apartheid era; with a more transparent media today, at least you know more of what is really going on.

correction, they are killers and need to be judged accordingly.

  • winifred.watson.9 - 2013-01-26 08:49

We have really become a sick society when children this age become criminals. Just goes to show we are living in a lawless country. If the law was properly instituted and criminals realize that they will pay for their crimes then maybe crime could be reduced. At the moment there are no examples to show these criminals that you will be severely dealt with. Most cases it take years before the cases actually gets to be heard and by that time dockets are lost or somebody has been bribed and so it goes on. They are hardly behind bars, if we are lucky, then they are out on the streets again.

A sad, sad, happening, that children can perpetuate such a crime. The law in not inforced in SA so people do just as they please. Horrific that this was done by such young children.

Not surprised, the kids learnt from the elders.

JOHANNESBURG - The mother of a teen girl killed during a so-called satanic ritual hugged and kissed the mother of her daughter’s killer at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Kirsty Theologo’s mother Sylvia and Myrtle Moody comforted each other after Lester Moody and co-accused Jeremy King pleaded guilty to murdering Kirsty, 18. Moody and King, both 18, entered into a plea bargain with the State in exchange for a lesser sentence and to testify against co-accused, Lindon Wagner, 21, Robin Harwood, 18, Harvey Isha, 23, and a minor aged 15.On October, 21, Theologo, 18, and Bronwyn Grammer’s hands were allegedly cut and placed on a Bible to allow the blood to soak in.They were later doused with petrol and set alight as part of the ritual on a hill in Linmeyer, Johannesburg.Theologo succumbed to burn wounds and Grammer, 14, was hospitalised for months and underwent skin grafts. Citizen, 26 Jan 2013

      yanga.maroloma - 2013-01-26 13:12

@brandon, and those on Themba's comment, who did they learn from??? Yhe?? Are you now suprised??? You must be the worst of the worst!!!

      kedebeer - 2013-01-26 13:18

and your point Thwala, children murderers , all the same , shame

      themba.thwala.775 - 2013-01-26 14:23

kedebeer, children of all races learn from their parents.

      ann.ornelas - 2013-01-26 21:00

@Themba Exactly we, as parents, have failed our children PERIOD. And sadly we continue to do so as is evident from this story and the one about the 3 Limpopo orphans who were stoned to death by 6 12-14 year olds. Hats off to the Mums Sylvia and Myrtle who could comfort each other. This is what we should take as the ultimate reconcilliation and follow in their footsteps.

  • sharmay.thuynsma - 2013-01-26 09:15

No words...Just disgust at their actions. They deserve whatever is coming their way.

  • matthew.patrick.925 - 2013-01-26 09:24

For early and pre-teens to murder children who are younger still there have to be some serious psychological issues and they are in dire need of help. After all, they're still kids. They should be allowed the chance to be rehabilitated and not another prison number lost in the system.

      philip.keeling.7 - 2013-01-26 11:51

You patrick need rehabilitaion. Feed em to the crocs!

  • celeste.m.lackay - 2013-01-26 09:25

These killers are but the tip of the ice berg. The result of poverty, a corrupt government and an inefficient, ineffective and inept education department. These killers learn what they live, the old Nurture/Nature debate. The orphans that were killed were actually spared the same lot as those who perpetrated this horrendous crime. Places of safety are also not all that safe and are often the breeding ground of criminals and gangs.

      marjorie.smith.92 - 2013-01-26 10:04

Celeste, have to agree with you on the place of safety definitely a breeding ground.

      bmhadebe - 2013-01-26 10:22

You cannot seriously blame the current government for this, if u do then the root of it all is the apartheid government.

      celeste.m.lackay - 2013-01-26 11:18

@bmhadebe - What I'm saying is what I've always been saying, and that is just like the previous apartheid government prevented us blacks from receiving a quality education by legislating different levels of education for the different races, the current government strives to shackle our black kids by denying them access to an education that may open their eyes to their ineptitude and corruption. I neither blame nor condone these actions. I am stating a fact that is based on current evidence. We will NEVER be truly free if we don't challenge authority! We will always have these ills if we continue to absolve the ANC of their responsibility to provide a sheltered environment for our kids while providing them with the tools (read education) to get them out of the poverty cycle.

      kedebeer - 2013-01-26 13:20

bmhadebe , apartheid and hunger got nothing to do with it - this was murder

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2013-01-26 09:38

What is the president doing?. Suing newspapers over a picture, wining and dining in Davos telling investors what a great country this is and playing statesman in Africa. In the meantime the crime in this country has become intolerable and like usual not a word from our so called leader. We deserve better.

  • mart.botha - 2013-01-26 09:49

To protect society, these 6 must be tried as adults. Their parents or guardians must also be tried as accomplices. The days of making excuse upon excuse for weak human beings must end. There is little doubt in my mind that our lower to no income population numbers have been allowed to balloon out of control over the last 80 odd years. In this time the population has increased 10 fold ......and realistically from whatever the cause, a regressive mutation has occurred. I may not be 'allowed' to judge, but the quality of human life has seriously degenerated. The second, third and even fourth generations on this time line are being birthed by parents who hardly know how to look after themselves, never mind their offspring....resulting in the type of devious and anti-social behaviour as depicted in this story. I add that this allegation I am making does not know colour and is mostly prolific but not exclusive to the poorer people of all races. If you think that the 'fix' is to take wealth from the wealthy and give it to the poor, then you are 'taking a knife to a gun fight! No, sadly but quite seriously' the only way to fix this thing is to reduce the numbers. How is not a pleasant thought, but when you consider that the large quantity is responsibleMug for the general deteriation of the quality of the whole population, you will conclude that choices will be made. Mugabe, his Shona henchmen and Korean Military slaughtered the Matebele...how do you thing he kept power?

      celeste.m.lackay - 2013-01-26 11:46

What you are saying is an uncomfortable truth and reminds me of the movie Idiocracy (sic?) where a soldier of average intelligence is placed under hypersleep by the army, is forgotten about, and wakes up several years later to find a world filled and run by idiots. This because the stupid and poor kept on breeding while the clever and rich were too busy working and never found the right time to pass on their superior genes. It is a comedy, but one that has a very sombre undertone. Mind you I'm not provocating or condoning forced sterilisation nor genocide, I'm fighting for free, fair and competitive basic education (to grade 12, with a minimum pass of 50%) for ALL, regardless of race or income.

  • digger.mthembu - 2013-01-26 11:59

Raping and Killing another person cannot be tied to hunger. Did they fill their stomachs by raping that little girl? No. Did they fill their stomachs by killing all those other kids? No. This is a problem that goes a lot deeper than that, it's mainly because of irresponsible parenting. As young as they are, they were old enough to rape and old enough to kill, now they are little vulnerable minors that cannot stand trial for their actions, the system is out to protect them. What can we say? This is a beautiful country.

  • geraldene.smith.39 - 2013-01-26 12:18

What happened to those innocent little ones is cruel. Nobody should be stoned to death. Just the thought of what those poor kids must have experienced is heart breaking. Those kids need to be punished to understand that your actions carry consequence!!

  • nhlanhla.msiza.9 - 2013-01-26 12:21

  • vivienne.alexanderswartz - 2013-01-26 13:49

I feel that these teens should go to prison.they should be kept in an institution until they are 18years old and continue their sentence in prisoner all of them are living in an institution already it means that they are under supervision of professionals, that they do receive the necessary education on all different levels and should be able to truly understand the difference between right and wrong. Children start early with criminal activities and a soft hand approach is not always the best Solution! This was obviouslya well planned murder and either of them could try to stop this senseless act, but they did not!
