Teen's entire family wiped out by robbers

2012-07-24 08:47

Pretoria - A 19-year-old Pretoria teenager is the only living member of his family after his father died of complications from a gunshot wound sustained in a robbery.

Beeld reported that armed robbers shot dead Linda Coetzee, 47 and Ruan Coetzee, 21, in a robbery in Wonderboom seven months ago.

Sport physiologist Kobus Coetzee, 47, was shot three times and one of the bullets became lodged in his back.

Private investigator Mike Bolhuis was probing the matter and said Coetzee had complained last week about pain in his stomach.

Coetzee had undergone an operation and died on Monday morning at 03:00.

The last remaining member of his family, Dewald Coetzee said: “It is a very difficult time. It’s tough, but I’m getting a lot of support from my family.”

He said his aunts, uncle and his girlfriend were supporting him.

Bolhuis said he was still looking for those responsible. “We are working day and night to catch them.”

      rob.baggaley - 2012-07-24 09:13

Very sad to read this, as if the loss of his wife and son seven months earlier was not enough, the father too dies of complications due to his wounds and the youngest son suffers yet another loss. This will go down as yet another " robbery gone wrong " but I think many people are beggining to " read between the lines " with all this killing. Sincere condolances young man. No words can be of comfort to you @ this time.

      alon.fisher.752 - 2012-07-24 12:07

execution and life imprisonment is only to good for them, send them to hell while they still alive our correctional facilities sound like a five star hotel, we need forced labour, medical experiments, food and sleep deprivation, savage cruelty from warders and the rest will fall into place, and execution may apply to repeat offenders. Only harsh and draconian measures will save this beautiful place from crime, when the criminal fears the rule of law he is less likely to commit these crimes, and than all South African's can sleep peacefuly, Sorry for coming across like Heinrich Himmler but our law enforcement and justice system is a joke, and like my fellow Ssouth African's I can't take much more of this horror, where we have to live behind electric fences, burglar bars, our children no longer play in parks, we need people made of stern stuff to take this country forward and make it safe for all South Africans.

      philip.harris.967 - 2012-07-24 12:28

@ rob.baggaley ..this "robbery" or "hijacking" "gone wrong" is a pretty dumb statement. How does a hijacking "go right" ? And how do we know that the objective was not to murder and create fear in peoples minds ..with the car thrown in as a bonus.

      rob.baggaley - 2012-07-24 13:09

Dont be stupid philip. That is why it is an inverted comment. " Gone wrong " is the normal excuse that is used for the barbaric killings that accompany these racist murders. Otherwise you are spot on in your assumptions.

So we have serious stuff like this going down every minute of every day in South Africa, but the police target people for carrying/using dagga?!!! Let's get our priorities straight please. These are crimes with real victims!

Yes @lebogang and to make matters worse our president release many criminals on presedential pardon each year. How can we expect these criminals to respect the rule of law? No wonder we have such a high crime rate!!

  • lebo.radebs - 2012-07-24 09:49

These thugs kill without mercy,,, it just breaks my heart reading about such stories because whether we like it or not, people of all races die day in & day out here in S.A because of crime. How many more lives should we lose before the Police can actually do their job properly?,, I'm not saying they are not fighting crime, but they are fighting it on a very small scale. I mean the question I keep asking myself is, what is it that 1 can do 2 make things better in this country cause it's clear that we cant relly only on the police as they are doing very little 2 help the situation.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-07-24 10:25

The problem is the government do not want to take drastic action like deploying the army, they say it infringes on the rights of the people (who are getting butchered everyday). For every criminal shot dead by police 100 take their place, surely by now we should be saying enough!! Let's deploy the army to do the street patrols and the police to do the investigations!! People are dying while the ANC cruise the streets in their armoured cars and bodyguards sipping champagne and reading the newspaper!

      lebo.radebs - 2012-07-24 10:38

@ PointBlank,, I couldn't have said it better, which reminds me of time when they deployed the army for a month a few years ago in my township because the crime rate was just too high, and then that whole month there was almost a zero crime rate,, there was peace & one could walk the streets anytime of the day or night without the fear of being robbed. But a few months after the army left, even though there were police personnel, the crime rate went back 2 the usual (Sky high). So i agree, we do need the army

Another headline, another slide into "ineptocracy". More shocking outbursts from a concerned public, yet ever more clever rhetoric from the ruling party. Yet more graves, yet more shattered lives. Just unbelievable. Just so unfair....anything but "just" actions to be expected. And we all simply...carry on, carrying on. What else can we do? Under the loose of the executioner we should all find ourselves for letting this situation prevail in the first place. Useless words on on-line forums and chat rooms, call's for something to be done - ultimately ... deserted into nothing. And we carry on, carrying on, while all around us crumbles and our "desensitisation" increases, more graves, more words and more...carrying on, carrying on. My heart bleeds for this boy and my ever increasing disgust at a government that has veered so far from anything resembling such, ever deeper. How do you recover from something like this?

I am in no way saying that christianity is wrong, just not for me. I salute you. The problem is that the rubbish that break into your house definitely do not have your faith and love. They break in to cause harm or worse death. The least this pathetic excuse for a government can do is install the death penalty again. The jails are already overcrowded. I hope you never lose your faith but please look after your safety as well.

  • drishworth - 2012-07-24 10:07

Stories like this break my heart - which means that my heart is being broken almost daily. When it comes to a better life for all the ANC have failed (big time)ALL South Africans. The ANC is too busy shouting about the evils of apartheid (an evil system indeed) but are blind to the fact that under their rule more innocent people have died, in 18 years, because of their unwillingness to truly address the human rights of the people than was ever lost under 40 odd years of apartheid. I don't see this as a race issue as it is both Blacks and Whites that are victims of a Government which is more despicable than the Nats ever were. My heart goes out to Dewald Coetzee - another member of South African society whose energy will be spent on grieving instead of building up a great nation.

Accept that race has been a driving force for thousands of years and change will not happen over night. accept that while you may be able to criminalize the verbalization of race based hate you will never stop the thoughts. also accept that you are the only one that can hurt your own feelings, nothing I say or do can do that unless YOU LET ME. Stop being a sniveling little baby and get on with life, do not expect hand outs and don't expect others to shoulder your problems for you.

If I read stories like this,I strongly believe that the failure of SA is eminent if the current idiots that is in charge of SA holds power for much longer. That masango idiot who calls himself a MEC at the toll gate saga yesterday is proof of what we do not need in SA. The 'old" SA under the apartheid regime did not work and was set for failure as per the international community, and now the new South Africa is also set for failure under the ANC. Our justice system is a joke, criminals go to jail, smuggle in whores, wives, girlfriends, booze, cellphones with internet and copious amounts of drugs. When Incarceration is a deterrent and not just some pity induced rehabilitation institution this kind of criminal behaviour will cease to proliferate. But neither DA or ANC have the balls to change that as this will violate criminal's constitutional rights(at the behest of the HRC).

My oh my so many racist comments. Reading the comments one might come to the conculsion that only whites are affected by crime or that only whites are murdered in this country. The media would do well to dispel this myth by reporting on the +15000 murders that happen in this country every year. We will then see who bears the brunt of crime in this country.

      manu.dibango.96 - 2012-07-24 15:20

Well we won't know will we because the media won't report such stories if they happen in the townships or poorer suburbs. Think about it, everyday there are about 50 murders countrywide, but we only get to hear about the ones that will whip some people into a frenzy. We get to hear about the ones that will cause some to lash out with racist rhetoric. As for the other +40 other murders, well who cares they don't have names because the media doesn't believe that they are important enough for us to know about. What happened to this family is a tragedy, but it's a tragedy that repeats itself everyday right around the country to people we do not know.

      jacobus.m.vantonder - 2012-07-25 12:48

In 2 weeks 2 breakings at my parents home, they tried the 3rd time to come and get the things they left behind, but found me there, the police took them of the wood with nails, the place they jump the wall and found 1 where I cable tied him to a pole....sopping wet at 3 am, tie down and just add cold water. O did I say they were all white. White/ black, I will treat them all the same when I catch them... some of us are just "gat vol" of all this crime..

this is not a racial issue. In the townships we have more deaths like these but they are not published on media. INkosi ibe naye.

      Nickisking - 2012-07-25 13:13

So many whites in USA and UK who hate other religions and races just because they different. In SA - it's about the crime rate and statistics - go figure!!!

  • John - 2012-07-24 20:27

WE the PEOPLE have two basic rights. The right to LIFE and the right to PROPERTY. Anyone who deprives one of life deserves to lose his or her life. Anyone who deprives another of his property deserves to lose his property and to make restitution. Forget race. 10% of any race group are criminal. Unfortunately 10% of the black population is equal to 100% of the white population. Blacks also suffer from crime. The people need to be aware of the behaviour of those around them and watch for criminal behaviour.

This is a sad and shocking story. However personally I am not surpried because SA has no leader (President). SA needs a tough and firm leader who would work day and night to solve this problem once and for all. I thought the country was a rainbow nation where all races were free to enjoy the riches that she has to offer. I therefore dont understand why whites should continue being persecuted. It's high time the death penalty was brought back. Because this business of giving these bastards lenghthy prison terms does not work simply because their colleagues would try everything possible to break them out. As long as they are still alive we know for sure that they are still a menace to society. The ANC government has failed to run that country. Thats the truth. To the whites I say please shoot first and ask later. For how long should you continue to be persecuted like this!! To the whole electorate, I say it is high time the ANC was kicked out of office. It has failed the nation. SA needs a visionary, dynamic and intelligent leader. Someone who can instill the spirit of hard work to these evil monsters. They need to know that nothing comes for free in this world. They need to take their education seriously. A lot of outreach programs are needed in SA.

      stephanie.sutherland41 - 2012-07-25 09:31

@Collin - billions in monetary Humaritarian and development aid is sent to South Africa yearly, but that money never goes for the purposes such as education, medicine and housing as it is intended. I have posted the link previously to site that monitors the foreign aid contributions and i wonder were this money ends up, because it sure doesn't do anything usefull for the poor.

      xolaniv2 - 2012-07-25 11:01

Chief I hear you saying * to the whites shoot first and ask questions later * will this solve anything? Say for argument sake, this was a black person who find himself or herself in this position. would you say the same thing? Think before you say something. Please!! Don't get me wrong am not condoning what happened as being right. Ma condolences to the sole survivor, hope those responsible will be caught and face justice.

      ian.vanhelsdingen - 2012-07-25 16:10

@xolaniv you ask what would happen if it was a black person in this situation?? I challenge you to find ONE example of a black family being wiped out by robbers or a black 12 year old boy being drowned in boiling water...truth is all these tortures and executions happen almost exclusively to white is that possible when whites make up less than 10%??? This is racial hatred and prosecution of minorities by the majority...unfortunately the world still feels the need to "protect" the 90% from the 10%...just incase the 10% decide to give the 90% a taste of their own medicine ie murders and torture...what a strange world we live in

      Nicki.Labuschagne - 2012-07-25 16:13

There are so many senseless, brutal murders and many black people commenting that whites deserve what they get, that I have reached the point where I want to remove myself, my family and my skills from this country forever, in spite of the great love I have for Africa. We have lived and worked here for generations and have never been guilty of mistreating any member of another race, but I no longer feel safe or at home here. I feel like a fleeing refugee. Then I read a comment like yours and a little spark of hope flares up. Soon I remember that there are 100 angry, misinformed and vengeful people for every one who feels like you and that hope fades. I truly believe that if white people were treated fairly now, it would be an investment for everyone's future and there can be a new wave of reconciliation, a tidal wave. Most of all we need competent and honest leadership. Thank you for your attitude, you DO make a difference. I wish there were millions like you - what a great country this could be!

If society is sick and life is cheap, the law is not worthy of respect, and there is no political will (or competency) to change the situation, then this happens.

      paul.legrange.14 - 2012-07-27 09:47

Joe, lets get something straight right from the start....guns do not kill people!! People kill people!!!! Senseless horrific murders, rapes and assaults are not committed with the use of legally owned firearms! If a potential murderer knows that I am armed he will think twice before entering my property, and if he does, it is like willingly walking in front of a train....there will be consequinces. Secondly, this is not about race, this is about the blatant diregard for human life, and anyone that has no regard for human life should not to be allowed in society EVER!!

What is the value of security? How do you measure security?

      paul.legrange.14 - 2012-07-27 09:48

By the size of the gun!

  • daryn.smith.35 - 2012-07-25 08:05

Tragic! This is so sad. Why do South Africans need to live like this. These people are labeled as "robbers". But they are MURDERERS!

  • cyberdog.breath - 2012-07-25 08:10

Zuma's, and the ANC's complete dead silence on this matter is very re-assuring....

      Dipzen - 2012-07-25 08:52

On which matter? Crime or this incident in particular? If its the latter then I have to say unfortunately say that a lot of people on a daily basis lose family members and it would be a PR nightmare should the presidency comment on these

  • traceylee.krieling - 2012-07-25 08:18

Very Very Sad , I say bring back the death penalty !!!!!!! cause the family memebers live with a life sentence longing for their loved ones ,and their lives will never be the same .....

  • jose.d.santos.9041 - 2012-07-25 08:42

even death penalty is lite for these type of barbaric crimes ..they should be removed from society the same way that they done it.

  • willie.jansen - 2012-07-25 09:32

I had the priviledge of knowing the family... They will be sorely missed.. Its time we took a stand in our country to combat all these people who have no respect for life. Sterkte Ollie

      ed.carter.351 - 2012-07-25 10:31

@willie, my daughter had the privilege to being taught by both Linda and Kobus and I can tell her and the other students hearts are broken. Sorry to say, but as a professional, it's hard to pack up and leave SA because my parents are 77 and 81 years respectively. They need me here. Needless to say, our so called president blames apartheid for crime, his incompetence to act, Limpopo education issues, theft, graft, the list is endless, not sure if he also blames apartheid for his womanising?? I guess him ever taking accountability for the current racial divide, is a pipe dream. I wish they could just stop making racial or racist decisions along polotical lines, who knows, SA might just be the land of milk and honey.

  • kevin.gleeson.54 - 2012-07-25 11:27

Sterkte Dewald, this is very sad, my condolenses to you.

  • ako.gutshwa.7 - 2012-07-25 12:25

Don't you think we need to bring back the death penalty? It's pretty bad the news we read these days are bad, very bad. I was also reading about a boy who was boiled alive and there are so many bad stories like this one. Hoping that one day our government will hear our call

      merven.halo - 2012-07-26 10:05

Do you really think the ANC will let their comrades hang? They'll hang who ever don't agree with them. The ANC will use it as a tool to get rid of opposition.

      ako.gutshwa.7 - 2012-07-26 10:18

      @Merven very sad

  • esther.coetzee.50 - 2012-07-25 13:07

Pity that the bastards who killed the family in Walkerville, drowning the boy of 12 in boiling water, cannot be 'wiped out'. Ag,how could I forget, people like them are 'kroonwild' and cannot be touched

  • ronnie.govender.737 - 2012-07-25 13:18

Can some legal expert please advise how do we go about getting the DEATH PENALTY re-instated! This just can't go on, really!

      Thobile Lugwadu - 2012-07-25 18:31

We must pettition the ruling party to amend the constitution. The bill of rights sa everybody has a right to life. Thats why death penalty was abolished. If we want it back. Of which i do, parliament must change that clause and put it like,it excudes convicted murderes, rapists etc.

  • lucious.bodibe - 2012-07-25 13:56

and you still find people in this country that represent the rights of the criminals
