Johannesburg - A 14-year-old boy who allegedly hacked his mother, two siblings, and grandmother to death, will appear in the Daveyton Magistrate's Court next week, police said.

Police spokesperson Timothy Masilela said the matter had been set down for 19 July.

In May, a preliminary inquiry into the matter was held in camera at the court.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Medupe Simasiku said at the time the inquiry was to determine how to proceed with the case, given that the accused was a minor.

The teenager, who is being kept in a place of safety, allegedly used an axe to kill his mother, 42, and two siblings, aged 7 and 3-months-old, on 24 May.

His grandmother was wounded in the attack and admitted to the Far East Rand Hospital, where she died on 5 July.

The youth's two other siblings, aged 8 and 9, escaped and alerted neighbours.

He fled the scene, but was later arrested and charged.

Police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini said at the time that the teenager did not appear in court initially, because he was undergoing psychological evaluation.
