Johannesburg - There were hugs and smiles in the Constitutional Court on Thursday, when the court suspended evictions from an inner-city building in the throes of an ownership dispute.

The group faced a Christmas without anywhere to live before successfully challenging the eviction, scheduled for December 15.

The building they live in was recently sold and the new owner wanted them removed. The occupants however challenged the sale, alleging it was done fraudulently as they were part of an inner-city housing trust.

The challenge on the ownership issue would be heard in the Supreme Court of Appeal.
