Johannesburg - Police with shields, batons and rifles stood guard outside the Swartruggens Magistrate's Court early on Tuesday, ahead of the appearance of murder accused Johan Nel.

Nel, 18, allegedly killed Enoch Tshepo Motshelanoka, 10, Keditlhotse Elizabeth Moiphitlhi, three months, her 31-year-old mother, Anna, and Sivuyile Danani, 35, and wounded six others on January 14 in what has been described as a racially-motivated shooting spree.

The street leading to the court was cordoned off on Tuesday, with hundreds of protesters expected for his appearance.

After a previous court appearance, Nel had to be taken away in an armoured vehicle, which was pelted with stones and cans by an angry crowd.
