Terre’Blanche painting set to draw fire

2012-05-31 14:38

Johannesburg - Just as The Spear saga draws to a close, so another artist is set to grab the limelight with his controversial piece showing the late Eugene Terre’Blanche sitting with his murderer on his lap.

The painting is the work of Vusi Beauchamp and shows the late Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging leader reading to Mahlangu from the Bible, the Sowetan reported.

Beauchamp told the newspaper his interest in Terre’Blanche’s murder drove him to paint the artwork.

He says he is trying to question the possibility that Mahlangu's allegations of sodomy might be true.

"I was at home watching the news when the story of Terre'Blanche's murder was shown. That is when the idea of painting this work hit me.

"I portrayed Terre'Blanche reading the Bible because we all know that right-wingers always claim they are superior to blacks," Beauchamp said.

"In my painting the Bible is a sign of power. Right-wingers use the Bible to justify racism.

Beauchamp says the painting was bought last week by local comedian John Vlismas.

Mahlangu was found guilty of killing Terre'Blanche.

You know...i feel like I'm in Gotham City and The Joker is running amok... Joker:" Introduce a little anarchy. Upset the established order, and everything becomes chaos. I'm an agent of chaos. Oh, and you know the thing about chaos? It's fair!"

      Smoke.ZN - 2012-05-31 14:48

before i get death threats saying how can this be fair and yada yada yada... i didnt want to use part of the quote so i included the "its fair" at the end. the point i'm trying to make it that things in this country has become so chaotic that its normal to us...

      Piet - 2012-05-31 15:04

At least Brett had talent... That looks nothing like Terre'Blanche. But I find this funny though. Maybe some religion is what Mahlangu needs in his life cause he is definately god-less.

      Smoke.ZN - 2012-05-31 15:05

I welcome the ones that thumb me down to comment. Why don't you put down why you feel different to my comments.

      Jack - 2012-05-31 15:10

Tit-for-tat I don't give a sh1t, incase the 'freedom of expression' artist is looking for a reaction

      Gavin - 2012-05-31 16:07

I agree, I woke up and some moron had painted a picture of ouyr fearless leader with his usb dongle on display and the roads are working, I don't know if I wanna be pinched or shot.

      Mmannyo - 2012-05-31 18:08

I heard Zille was laughing again!! when she saw the picture. What are you sniffing zille? please share.

      Boer - 2012-06-01 02:52

Seems to me the artist are looking for exposure.

      Warren - 2012-06-01 06:45

Zille got photoshopped naked by a black man. Zille laughed. Terre'Blanche(Who I never supported, but since he is white why not(Anc supporter mentality)) now painted like this by a black man. I and probably most the nation laughs. Ayanda Mabula painted Zuma's penis in crutches. Not one person says a word. Zuma painted by a white man. Black nation in uproar. By the above statement how is it possible that whites are racist? I'm not saying all whites are not racist, but what more proof does a black man need that the way the ANC handled this Spear incident was totally wrong? Do you need the ANC to literally come to your home and steal your money from you to vote otherwise? Do you need the ANC to literally take you and rape or murder you? Do you need the ANC to literally build their double story 10 room home next door to you while you live in a shack? They are doing this everyday to everyone in SA. The ANC have the power to change the country yet they sit back and watch everyone suffer and then when something like the Spear comes along they do everything in their power to remind blacks of Apartheid so they can steer votes. Don't vote for color. Vote for SA! If you don't want to vote for DA(Said this because since I'm white most blacks reading this will think I want them to vote DA) then don't, but at least vote for a Government that gives a crap!!!

      Preshen - 2012-06-01 08:35

He had a passion for black stallions but this one was a pony

      Passop - 2012-06-01 09:51

@ Curriemafia Painters and artists are two different things. Know the difference LoL

      Natasha - 2012-06-01 10:18

Agreed!!!! And like curriemafia says "Where were these clowns when I was renovating??"...Suddenly they are all trying their hand at painting. WHat's next?? I shudder to think

      Megan - 2012-06-01 11:43

I never thought this day would come, but: I FINALLY AGREE WITH POLOYATONKI!!!! Wow, this should probably warrant a bit of snow fall but Poloy, you are so right. The bible is full of fairly tales! And, WHY should we care, about either THIS painting or the "the Spear"

      angeliquevn - 2012-06-01 11:50

Pop some popcorn.Pull up a comfy couch. Settle in, enjoy the show!!

      sharyn.dabbs - 2012-06-01 13:12

What do you mean exactly about chaos being fair? I can't say I agree, but am interested in your remark

      karel - 2012-06-01 13:15

And I was wondering about apartheid - was it good or bad????????? because their is no diffrence in whats happening today.

      Jacqui - 2012-06-01 13:22

Smoke, you are in Gotham City and the Joker has multiplied..

      Jacqui - 2012-06-01 13:25

Natasha, paint by numbers is next. We can then all paint our own version of the Spear and Willie.

      goyougoodthing - 2012-06-01 14:33

The piece is most probably true. It explains ET's actions. He's dead so who knows, hardly a parragon of virtue, was he.

      sean.venske - 2012-06-01 15:35

Um Dee, try read the article again. The artist very clearly states what the painting means and it isnt all roses. While Murray claims his painting was not an attack on JZ, this clown happily admits his is an attack on ET (who I personally think was a dinosaur in mentality but like every other person in this country, did not deserve to have his life ended at the hand of another person)

      Mark - 2012-06-01 15:47

      Two words - Who cares...

  • richard.hipkin - 2012-05-31 14:46

Really? And this will cause a stir?? Please god no!!

      procold2 - 2012-05-31 15:00

For sure, dont think i could handle another painting debacle dominating the news

      E=MC2 - 2012-05-31 15:19

... so what...? Are all the whites supposed to go riot now? This has racism written all over it, but He's black, so its ok.

      John - 2012-05-31 15:56

@E=MC2 -> 100%. Let's cry RACISM and organize a mass march so the painting can be destroyed. Oh and the march can't be considered to be bullying though :). Oh wait, we're white so Cosatu will probably violently stop the march as we're not allowed to cause we're white and ja, you right, the painter cannot be racist because he's black. Forgot how things work here, damn *facepalm

      Squeegee - 2012-05-31 16:04

John, lets ignore them. The only thing interesting about this is that Trolls can paint (or think they can)

      Horst - 2012-05-31 16:59

I'll bet he is not going to get R136000 for that painting.

      Dee - 2012-05-31 17:09

E=MC2 ..... Odd ... I don't see anything 'racist' in this picture? At first glance - a white man cradling a small black person + a Bible - so my interpretation is that it could convey a message of reconcilliation. The tone of white fellas skin looks 'off' to my personal 'eye' ...but an overall interesting picture ...and if the artist had anything sexual on his mind - it passed over my head.

      Lana - 2012-06-01 08:06

Sad but true, you know the saying; 'there's no such thing as bad publicity' and now every would-be painter will try and flogg that poor nag to death.....

      goyougoodthing - 2012-06-01 15:37

What they think is that this will upset all whites. Well it doesn't. Eugene was at best a racist and made an idiot of himself. Why is it always the dumb whites who think that they are better than everyone.

      marnusmnorval - 2012-06-01 19:33

We dont think we are better than you.. we know we are..

  • Richard - 2012-05-31 14:47

Surely they can't ban that one. Nice white guy teaches black guy about the Bible.

      Alf - 2012-06-01 07:12

Teach him to read since he won't be able to learn it through formal education, which is non-existent.

  • Richard - 2012-05-31 14:54

Okay this will be interesting but what goes for the one must go for the other. I just cannot help but feel that this artist is trying to get a ride on the Spear wagon. Why am I not surprised. I think the Spear is going to inspire many artists for a while to come yet.

      sachasea - 2012-06-01 18:08

And thus doth the Speargate Saga continue...

  • reyn.varkevisser - 2012-05-31 14:55

I do not think it will. All it shows is his kind heart towards his worker and him educating his farmworker. Just another artist trying to make a name. Hope he pays for the publicity.

  • simba.lumbe - 2012-05-31 14:55

I agree, another painting WTF?????? There are far more serious issues in SA!!

  • Rocky - 2012-05-31 14:57

The painting drawing fire?????? Please don't make me laugh. It will be out of people's minds in less than 24 hours. Shame, what a pathetic reaction.

  • kenneth.mthethwa - 2012-05-31 14:57

      kyle.tamblyn - 2012-05-31 15:21

And my guess is you were all up in arms over the painting of Zuma? Typical.

      Merven - 2012-06-01 12:40

Yes, I like this also, basically the artist compare Zuma with ET. At least there are some blacks with a sense of logic that can see the resemblance between the AWB and ANC.

  • dennis.vermaak.5 - 2012-05-31 14:58

"Terre’Blanche painting set to draw fire" Why ? they are fully clothed !!!!! Artist seeking attention !!

  • David - 2012-05-31 15:03

Gay ... its Just a Bad painting ... Final ... but it does show you the mindset of the country ... White draws a painting of Jacob Zuma ( Douche Bag black ) so a Black paints a painting of a Terre Blanche ( Douche bag white ). not even gonna mention the Hellen Zille painting ... if im right its 1- White painters and 3- blacks ... tut tut were falling behind

      Schmee - 2012-05-31 15:28

And in the end we have a whole lot of white people eternalised through a painting. Bet you they are going to be upset that the Zuma painting was ruined.

      Merven - 2012-06-01 12:42

Lol, I love this. A white artist make a painting and a German art collector buys it, a darkie does a painting and a local comedian buys it!! Oh the irony.

Mervyn....thanks for the laugh of the day ! Hahahahahaa.

  • George - 2012-05-31 15:03

Sometimes it's a shame to be Souht African. We lack creativity, talent and most importantly brains. I mean, you start selling chicken feets then everybody wants to sell chicken feets. People spend too much time recreating other people's work instead of coming up with their own thing. The media is responsible for this mess. They give coverage to the slightest stupid things.

      Bulelwa - 2012-05-31 22:19

I agree and can't help but wonder what kind of goals does one set for himself because life is about setting goals, having big dreams, plans, working towards success, positive attitude and mentality, imagining yourself a great model for the next generation, always longing to make a positive impact and the list goes on. Isn't that what is supposed to be in one's mind than all this junk?

      Nico - 2012-05-31 22:55

Yes it's what and who we are. Put any kid around 'intellectuals'and they grow up like them. Similar when a child listen to 'criminals' or experience 'bad' things, it can change their life forever. We all have talents, some you already use and others are yet to be discovered. Read uplifting and interesting articles and share that 'brainy' ideas. Africa - a mere 360 years trying to 'catch up' can/could have prosper far more. This is/was Koi/San land and both black and white 'invade' South Africa but due to lack of historical knowledge this 'mess' now needs intelligent and wholesome solutions. No toy-toy or wasting time. Hard work and study. Life's a journey, enjoy the ride.

      Dee - 2012-05-31 23:50

lol.... and we have one model Tweeting foul things, gets publicity and another one follows her idea. They both get invited to tea with a politician. (A TERRIBLE punishment imo!) Perhaps Brett and this artist will get invited to supper at Luthuli house? I LOVE South Africa.

  • John - 2012-05-31 15:07

      Dee - 2012-06-01 00:01

ET was actually a highly literate & peotic person I believe. The painting of a bible + him cradling a small black person would surely have him writing a peom from where he might now view it from. I think Mrs T's 'non-bitter' response after the trial indicates that she is a person who could make 'non-bitter' interpretation of the painting?

  • brylea.slawson - 2012-05-31 15:47

It isnt even a good painting! Looks absolutely NOTHING like Eugebe T. Riding on the coat tails of "the spear" me thinks......move on already! There are people protesting over a painting(the spear)!! A PAINTING!!! how come when a 5month old baby was murdered just the other day, no one protested? or when an entire province is without textbooks and its already June...NO ONE protested!? A 17 year-old mentally challenged girl was gang raped & the video went viral. No one protested... Our imminent police chief is an alleged gangster & has brought our police service to its knees. No one protested! Our democracy is going down the toilet but no one protests to that!.....and the list goes on..... And our country goes hysterical over a painting? Where are our priorities? this rubbish isnt even worth the airtime it has received!

  • Peet - 2012-05-31 15:48

The differance between the two figures is in zumas case the reflection and meaning has been proven.Tereblanche was a victim and his murder expressed the brutalallity and barbaristic culture of blacks breaking law, norms and ethics. This will not change my racism, but zuma might change his lifestyle.

What are you implying? So far not one cry of racism, just people joking about it. Look it up in the dictionary, it's called a sense of humour. Are you seriously comparing the above posts to the ANC's and their supporters' reactions?

The thing is most white people don't care for right wing awb types and we certainly don't see an attack on them as an attack on the whole white race, that would just be moronic because we consider ourselves autonomous beings who are not defined by our race. Therefore the picture is not really insulting its just a bit weird if you ask me!

Actually a sad looking painting, not a bad piece of artwork. I see no reason for it's sensationalization .
