Cape Town - Eight stun grenades were fired in quick succession on the doorstep of Parliament on Wednesday afternoon as thousands of students gathered outside the National Assembly.

News24 reporter on the scene, Jenna Etheridge, described the moment students broke through the gates and stormed Parliament.

"At first they held back because police were mock charging towards them but eventually students gained courage and immediately started pushing through. Police officers retreated and then thousands of students started pouring in.

"About two minutes after all the students got inside - students gathered in front of the National Assembly - stun grenades started going off. Just before that, we had the riot police pushing students forward with their shields."

She said students fled shortly after, dispersing in all directions.

Students around the country are protesting proposed fee hikes for 2016.
