Thief gets drop on cop during toilet stop

2012-10-18 22:46

Johannesburg - A man was arrested on Thursday after he allegedly stole a marked police bakkie from the Pretoria West police station, Gauteng police said.

A policeman apparently rushing to the toilet left the Nissan double cab in a parking bay with the keys in the ignition, Captain Bonginkosi Msimango said.

"Subsequently, the constable heard somebody screaming that a strange person was driving out with the state vehicle," Msimango said.

A chase ensued as the vehicle was travelling towards the Ben Schoeman highway. During the chase the alleged thief lost control and the bakkie overturned.

He was unhurt, tried to run away, but was caught and arrested. The police car was badly damaged.

He was detained at the Wierdabrug police station and expected to appear in Pretoria Magistrate's Court soon.

He would face charges of possession of a stolen motor vehicle and theft of a state vehicle.

      croix.mactee - 2012-10-19 05:33

Good one, Nabil! Make this cop pay for the repairs/replacement of the vehicle, as he was negligent. Why must taxpayers foot the bill for someone's STUPIDITY?

      OSSY24 - 2012-10-19 07:05

      erich.goosen - 2012-10-19 09:12

All police vehicles should be equipped with first aid kits which includes something for tummy ailments. KFC foods are not what it used to be.

  • Jacques - 2012-10-19 00:04

This article's heading should have started with 'Oh shucks...' by the sound of this!

  • Maxodin - 2012-10-19 02:08

Why not charge him with impersonating a police officer as well as theft of Any police dockets that were in the car as well as theft of a firearm etc. time to be harsh on brazen criminals like this one.

  • beverly.young3 - 2012-10-19 04:09

He left the keys in the vehicle? WTF....what idiot does that? Its simple really, this police oke should be made to pay for the thing. It is beyond belief....

  • Sechaba30 - 2012-10-19 05:55

It looks like its a norm in Pretoria for Police to leave the keys in the Ignition, two weeks ago I was in Pretoria the Police went to the Standard Bank on Pretorius Street, he left the ignition running with the doors not even closed properly. The Police was driving one of the old police taxi.

      sihlangu.hokweni - 2012-10-19 07:21

By 'old police taxi' I guess u mean the SIYAYA. Oh! Those are in very high demand in Soshanguve,KZN

      gerrit.vanpletzen - 2012-10-19 09:22

Yeah, and driving an old police taxi should also be a separate offence.

  • sihlangu.hokweni - 2012-10-19 07:38

It is by sheer luck that the thief didn't just tilt the seat, pull out the R5 Riffle (its a well-knon fact that every police bakkie does carry @least an R5 RIFFLE @ night)

  • arthur.salvado - 2012-10-19 07:39

If only he had gone to school. But of course, there's no more books. Future cops in the making.

      sihlangu.hokweni - 2012-10-19 08:11

How would that help? Because if one has their wires crossed in their grey matter it doesn't really matter whether they have MScs or Phds they'll still go on

  • mphotant.thelejane - 2012-10-19 08:13

This officer was negligent and unfit to drive state vehicle. He should be subjected to disciplinary could he, with tax payers money! Jezzz!
