Thieves drown after farmer shoots them

2012-02-21 21:03

Johannesburg - Two would-be copper cable thieves drowned near Marble Hall in Limpopo after a farmer shot them on Tuesday, police said.

The 40-year-old farmer shot at the men after he caught them digging up cables around 03:00, Lieutenant Colonel Mohale Ramatseba said.

"The men, aged 32 and 35, ran into the farm dam and drowned. Both had bullet wounds in the head and upper body," Ramatseba said.

"Their lifeless bodies were recovered by police divers. The firearm used was confiscated for further investigations.

The case will be sent to the director of public prosecutions who will decide on the matter," Ramatseba said.

The names of the Mpumalanga men would be released as soon as their families had been notified. No arrests have been made.

Well done Boertjie, you show em!!!

      alansmartSnr - 2012-02-21 22:22

Aha.. at long last some good news! must be as thick as a brick! you seem to ignore the fact that they were stealing cable. Maybe you right.. it's a case of suicide. They were borrowing the cable to commit suicide. Then the owner came and they ran right in the path of a few bullets which per chance were coming their way and got in the head. With the headaches they decided to drink water but it leaked out of their heads and they fell unconcious and drowned.. Now this is just as much bulls%^&t as what you are fantasizing about. Your nick suits you 'cos you have no future if you live in a dreamers paradise..idiot!

      RichyDigitized - 2012-02-22 11:45

LOL, how did you know they were black Flowingrivers? Is it because they were stealing that tipped you off?

      cameronrh1 - 2012-02-22 11:48

@FlowingRivers.... I take it you dont pay taxes, everytime a few of these buffoons steal copper wires it costs the tax payers of this country not you... So for all i care, a bullet is a lot cheaper then having to deal with a tax increase due to these idiots stealing wires and us the "tax payer" having to pay for their stealing.

      JakesLR - 2012-02-22 11:50

According to Beeld website the farmer only shot the thieves because he was attacked with dangerous weapons when they noticed him. One of the attackers was shot within 5 meters from the farmer, he had no choice to shoot them. It makes the shooting a bit more relevant if you read the beeld's report

      James - 2012-02-22 13:34

Ken. Did you actually think about what you were going to say before you posted? Shame on you and others that think killing someone for stealing deserves to be shot. You are mindless trolls that heaven forbid have offspring!

      Mattewis - 2012-02-23 07:19

@James So you think the copper is just lying in the ground doing nothing and waiting to be stolen? You don't think that it may be supplying a hospital with electricity, or an exchange carrying vital communications? I presume you also think if your 15-year old daughter caught these two in the act, she wouldn't have been murdered by them? You probably think they'll politely apologize and stop in the act! How do you form the picture in your mind of what happened here? Two people propped up against a wall under search lights and shot at point blank range? Or a dark scene in a country listed at level 6 on the GenocideWatch scale where the farmer had to make a split second decision, & where the death toll of farmers already stands at an estimated more than 3000? Thankfully I can see in the votes that there are more "trolls" in this country than people like you! The tragedy in this story is that a farmer has now been left disarmed & defenseless by a police force that themselves are not sufficiently competent to handle firearms, and where "trainees" shoot handcuffed suspects lying face-down on the ground!

      RichyDigitized - 2012-02-23 10:46

I noticed Flowingrivers deleted his comment so here it is. "FlowingRivers - Killed for stealing copper wire..........I hope this farmer is prosecuted........ NO ONE SHUD BE KILLED FOR STEALING..................but i suppose Its black people killed so it shud be alright !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

      Hugh - 2012-02-23 13:33

@Flowingrivers, it might have been a black farmer, why the defence of thieves? Unlike you're belief, we need our farmers, black and white. Theives take heed.

  • Sean - 2012-02-21 21:09

Farmer should have thrown some muesli in the dam. Drowned after being pulled in by a strong currant.

  • mariuskowie - 2012-02-21 21:10

Wait for the outcries. A farmer protected his property and will have endless problems for that. In the meantime other farmers are getting executed and it is getting made off as common crime. What a Fu--ed-up country we have become.

      Georg - 2012-02-22 01:44

Look thereare two possible scenario's: 1. Down and out workers jobless because of the poor quality of educatiom and job creation, having to freed families. 2. A farmer so gatvol for the unprotected rasmpaging of his farm making him lose business. I can imagine that one of both of them could have been in a state of anciety and reacting on hopelesness or revenge. These kinds of incidents will keep on happeing intil there is a stong, non-corruot firce to pratect farmers - like the commando system that were fazed ot because it was doing sterling word.

  • Piet - 2012-02-21 21:12

This farmer is going to be prosecuted with the might of the law, just wait....

      Ken - 2012-02-21 21:14

The farmer did not kill them, they drowned by running on their own into a dam. Lets hope the courts get it right.

      Merven - 2012-02-22 10:00

There where no bullet wound in the head, the idiots at N24 did sha*t reporting again. According to Beeld, the thieves attack the man, and he shot them with a shotgun hitting both the men in the necks. They then fell backwards and rolled into the dam. So: 1. They were not shot in the head 2. They did not ran into the dam

      Perfume - 2012-02-22 12:24

According to the report on Beeld, no decisions have yet been made to prosecute the farmer. They tried attacking him first, he just defended himself.

@Atleeyarrow. And I don't know anyone who proudly associates themselves with the old south African flag...

      Merven - 2012-02-23 09:40

@Alex, not everbody make the same link to the old flag as you. We fought and died against terrorists and commumnists for that flag for many years. Under that flag SA had one of the top 10 armies in the world and some of the most successful special forces in history. Matter of fact, the only special forces till today that fought against 2 other countries' special forces at once (Russia and Cuba) and kicked some serious behinds while at it. Today's army is but a shadow of what it is suppose to be.

      Peter - 2012-02-23 12:33

@Merven Also did my 2 years in the SADF, but c'mon now, get over the flag issue, the new one looks really cool, and we have won two Rugby World Cups with it draped over our shoulders. The old flag is out, and it should stay out.

      Hugh - 2012-02-23 13:20

So Peter, you like the one where the ANC's flag is the primory focus? Sorry boet, but I hate every thing they stand for, and the only good thing about the blk; green and yellow was it was the colours of the SADF infantry.

  • Alan - 2012-02-21 21:58

Bullets in the head and upper body would handicap even the best swimmers.

      DuToitCoetzee - 2012-02-21 23:44

Sounds like he used a shotgun, because the chance of causing bullets wounds in both heads and bodies. One would presume the people would have ran after the 1st shot and therefore the possibility of a shotgun that cause more than one wound with one shot. Specially if it was 03:00. Coming from a policeman and being stated with a zero in front and in this format It look like it was am. Will rather wait for more facts before commenting more on incident.

      Bomb - 2012-02-22 08:27

Easy, as they ran away, they were shot in the upper body. Couldn't have been a big caliber weapon though, cause one to the upper body with a hunting rifle will drop you like a stone. When they entered the water, trying to get away, the only parts of their bodies sticking out might have been their heads, so that's what he aimed for. Crack shot this guy. And then obviously, too late they realized they couldn't swim, and subsequently died. Plausible???? Off course, many possible scenarios here, lets wait and see.

  • ralph.klopper - 2012-02-21 22:01

The worst part is that the police must have taken the farmers weapons and the two criminals have friends and family that know the police took the farmers only way to protect himself and his family.

Im white and I dont care what colour the theives or the farmer is, the theives got what they deserved they were commiting a crime and knew what possible outcomes they would be. Work it out peeps. It's 03:00 in the morning so it's dark. The farmer sees the two people busy digging something up on his farm and he shoots them in the head. (Good shot!) They then run away and drown in the farm dam!!! Forgive me if I sound like a cynic here, but I am having a problem working this one out. Surely if they had been shot in the head and upper body, they would have struggled to run away. Perhaps they had some accomplices who picked them up and threw them into the dam. Something doesn't add up here, but if the farmer's story is to be true then I say give him a medal. These copper theives have cost the country billions and have economically cost the country thousands of potential jobs, so I have absolutely no sympathy for them. The farmers on the other hand are being murdered at an alarming rate so it is inevitable that they will always react instinctively to protect themselves from any starngers on their property so this isn't necessarily a case of "murder" but perhaps more a case of self defence.

Dave - Farmer shot them and dropped them in the dam. Simple as that. He is covering his tracks.

      SJ Kleynhans - 2012-02-22 07:58

The would like to think that won't you!

      TheJaydedKing - 2012-02-22 08:19

You would like to think otherwise wouldnt you?

      betsy.compaan - 2012-02-22 08:21

@jay, and if it turns out that this was actually a black farmer? What then? Does the rules change? Does it make it ok? See it is very easy to see if your comments are racially based or on the difference between good and bad.

      TheJaydedKing - 2012-02-22 08:42

Betsy - You are the one bring race into this, at no point did I mention the colour of the farmer or the assailants I dont care what colour they are. If for just one moment you stop to read the story and imagine the situation you would see the the farmers story is very thin indeed. How does someone shoot not one but two ppl at night through the head and upper body and then they run away into a dam? How is it that its to dark for them to see the dam but not to dark for him to pull of two head shots and some body shots? I think a likely alternative is that the farmer shot and missed, the guys took off running an hit the dam, the farmer shot them from the side of the dam hence upper body and head shots. Think about it.

@ TheJaydedKing If you had bothered to read the article in Die Beeld yuo have ahve found out the following 1) The farmer was alerted by his staff 2) He took his shotgun with to investigate 3) When he was attcked he fired a shot 4) The thieves were hit in tyhe neck and chest and they stumbled and rolled down the earth wall of the dam into the water So before you make a complete idiot of yourself read the article OOPS too late you already have

  • SJ Kleynhans - 2012-02-22 07:53

I'm with the farmer. If you don't shoot they will kill you without hesitating! Previous events say enough to back up that one! Yippeee kaijayyy mthrfkr!!!

  • Marius - 2012-02-22 07:59

if these guys were REALLY innocent then let the farmer go to jail, we don't need people like him. To the cretin that said they were probably hitch have sh1t for brains, what would the motive be?

  • Colin - 2012-02-22 08:02

well, good to him for going for the thieves, but either way we will be short of one farmer.he wasn't killed but a farmer in jail doesnt farm land

  • Zion - 2012-02-22 08:03

I may be labelled as crude and insensitive but those bastards got what they deserve and a pity there were not more.

      Roann - 2012-02-23 04:05

doesn't sound like you know about ZION

  • lulama - 2012-02-22 08:11

How can people run to a dam after being shot in the head? This was an assassination.

      TheJaydedKing - 2012-02-22 08:21

Yup. In addition consider that its to dark for them to see a dam but not to dark for a farmer to shoot not one but two ppl in the head and upper body. The only alternative is that he shot and missed, they started running, went into the dam, he shot them in the dam.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-02-22 10:24

And you draw your conclusion on a News24 article?? How dumb are you two??

      TheJaydedKing - 2012-02-22 10:29

Likely the same intellectual capacity as someone who is commenting on two dumb ppl commenting on conclusions drawn from news24. Sit down while figuring it out.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-02-23 12:41

That doesn't make sense, go back and think about it again..
