Third KFC robber caught

2013-03-14 16:26

Johannesburg - A third robber involved in a clash with police at a KFC outlet in Mthatha was shot and wounded on Thursday, Eastern Cape police said.

Police spokesperson Mzukisi Fatyela said police found the man after they received information from residents of a nearby village.

After police cornered him, he opened fire.

The police retaliated and he was shot in the leg.

He was taken to a nearby hospital.

One of the robbers was killed during a shootout outside the fast food outlet on Wednesday night. Four men entered the KFC on Owens Road, in the Mthatha CBD, ordered a meal and ate.

"The suspects waited until it was after 22:00 and then they all pulled out firearms and demanded money," said Fatyela.

They took more than R15 000 and tried to steal a van parked outside.

"Unfortunately for them, police were around and they pounced on them. A shootout ensued between the police and the suspect[s]. One of the suspects was killed."

A policeman was wounded, as was a robber.

He was arrested on the spot and was under police guard in hospital.

Police were still searching for the last robber.
