Johannesburg - A third man was re-arrested on Monday after escaping from the Jane Furse police station holding cells with 13 other awaiting-trial prisoners, Limpopo police said.

The 22-year-old was re-arrested at Madibong village in Jane Furse after a tip-off from members of the community, Lieutenant Colonel Mohale Ramatseba said.

"The assistance of the community is highly appreciated."

On Sunday morning, 14 awaiting trial prisoners escaped after overpowering a police officer who was serving them tea.

They were awaiting trial for attempted murder, robbery, rape, vehicle theft, possession of suspected stolen property, and housebreaking.

Five were re-arrested shortly after their escape on Sunday and another two were re-arrested on Monday morning. The other six were still on the run.

"Those still at large are advised to hand themselves over to the police as they don't have any place to hide," Ramatseba said.

All eight arrested will appear in the Nebo Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on charges of escaping from lawful custody.
