Kimberley - A third person has died after being badly burnt in a fire at the house of ZF Mgcawu District Municipality speaker Nomkhaya Mjila, who was doused in petrol and set alight in her bed over the weekend.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Donald Mdhluli said the woman, who was in her forties, died in hospital.

Mjila’s 9-month-old granddaughter and a 35-year-old family member also died in the fire.

The Diamond Fields Advertiser reported that Mjila is in a critical but stable condition.

The incident happened after well wishers, including Mjila’s husband, came to see her at a relative’s house in Olifantshoek where she was recuperating after being discharged from hospital.

The visitors left the house at about 22:00 on Friday evening, but someone - believed to be Mjila’s husband - came back to the house and entered through an unlocked door.

Petrol was poured on Mjila and she was set alight. The man fled the scene.

A suspect was arrested shortly after on the Olifantshoek road. He had sustained burn wounds and a stab wound to his neck. Northern Cape police said it was believed he had tried to kill himself after the incident. He was admitted to hospital for treatment.

Police are investigating cases of arson, three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.

Olifantshoek is about 80km south-west of Kuruman.
