Thousands gather for Alexandra celebration

2012-09-22 12:04

Johannesburg - Thousands of people began gathering at the Alexandra Stadium on Saturday where the township would be celebrating a century since its establishment.

President Jacob Zuma was expected to give a keynote address in one of the country's oldest townships later in the day.

The rainy Johannesburg weather cleared at mid-morning allowing more people to join the celebration.

Dressed in African National Congress colours, with some wearing traditional attire to celebrate Heritage Month, the crowd sang: "Those who do not want Zuma must go back."

While Alexandra has seen a lot of development in housing projects and community facilities, it is still plagued by poverty and unemployment.

I don't see why you are moaning seeing that if you are right, the distribution of free cds will help curb the population explosion.

Another tedious revision of history by JZ. I think free stuff is the only way to get people to sit through that

Or they could clean up their neighbourhood, dedicating this weekend to improving their community. Politicians are just going to promise them dreams.

I presume that Alexandra houses many people of different or no political pursuasion. With that in mind, all should put aside their differences to celebrate a memorable day. Why then does this, and just about every other social gathering in this country, turn into a political rally? Why sing for Zuma and ask people who do not support him not to join the celebrations? Has JZ ever spent more than a few hours in this township? Did he ever spend the night with the people? Did he experience the flooding and burning of shacks in Alex? Did he ever have to share his home with rats as big as dogs? I hope that today does not degenerate into a sham pushing JZ's ambitions at Mangaung. The people of Alex deserve better, much better.

It is so thypical for this idiot called JZ to go on a spending spree of hundreds of thousands "celebrating" when the money could be used to upgrade the the township, build schools, fill in potholes, etc.

      True that

  • Lang Henning - 2012-09-22 13:44

So what exactly are they celebrating? 100 years of living in poverty?

  • asdhasgd - 2012-09-22 14:46

the crowd sang: "Those who do not want Zuma must go back." While Alexandra has seen a lot of development in housing projects and community facilities, it is still plagued by poverty and unemployment. AND THESE are the 'tards who keep voting in ANC and complaining about lack of services yet they still support him?? WHERE IS THE LOGIC????

So Zuma will spew out the same old drivel about what a great job he and his cronies are doing and sadly many will believe him..so sad.Where the hell is the intellect?
