Three arrested for cop killings

Johannesburg - Three people allegedly involved in two separate police killings have been arrested, Gauteng police said on Monday.

All three were arrested on Friday, Brigadier Mashadi Selepe told News24.

"Two of them were linked to the killing of Constable [Njabulo] Buthelezi last month, and one is linked to the murder of Constable [Frans] Ledwaba at Park Station in March," spokesperson Brigadier Mashadi Selepe told News24.

The man arrested for Ledwaba's murder was also linked to a number of house and business robberies.

On Monday morning, a man suspected of killing a police officer and wounding another around 02:10 on Saturday morning in Hillbrow was himself killed during a shoot-out with police in Jeppestown.

Another man arrested during the same confrontation has been linked to the theft of a police firearm in Ekurhuleni earlier this year.

City Press reported earlier this month that Buthelezi, 35, and colleague Siyabonga Moloi were patrolling at Chris Hani Crossing in Vosloorus when they came across a robbery in progress at Cash Crusaders.

A shoot-out ensued with a heavily armed gang and Buthelezi was fatally wounded. Moloi was not hit.

Over 50 police officers have been killed this year.
