Johannesburg - Three men have been arrested for allegedly defrauding Metrorail, says the Passenger Rail Agency of SA (Prasa).

The group was arrested at the weekend for allegedly being involved in the production of counterfeit train tickets, said Prasa spokesperson Lesedi Mapheto on Monday.

"The arrested men, including a mastermind who is an IT specialist, have been producing illegal tickets and defrauding Prasa rail operations, which is responsible for the operations of Metrorail and Shosholoza Meyl.

"The IT specialist has been on the wanted list for similar fraud-related cases for many years," said Mapheto.

The specialist was arrested at a wedding in Soweto on Sunday.

Another of those arrested was a Prasa ticket examiner.

Prasa rail operations CEO Mosenngwa Mofi said this was one of a few looming arrests that would serve to curb all fraudulent activities.

"We cannot tolerate any form of illegal activities that result in Prasa losing revenue," he said, adding that the fraudulent activity had resulted in loss of income.

"We are waging a serious and sustained war against all fraudsters and all would-be fraudsters and we will not stop until we have a fraud-free environment," said Mofi.

The group was expected to appear in court soon.
