Johannesburg - Three teenage girls were burnt to death and 23 injured when they jumped from a building at the North West School for the Deaf in Leeudoringstad which caught fire in the early hours of Monday morning.

The fire broke out at around 01:00 at the school's girls' hostel, North West police spokesperson Major Pelonomi Makau said.

"Three girls, aged 16, 17 and 18 burnt to death," he said.

"Twenty-three were injured due to jumping from the first floor of the building to the ground floor when they were trying to escape the fire."

The injured were taken to hospital and were being treated for smoke inhalation and injuries sustained when they jumped from the building, said Makau.

A computer room was also damaged by the fire.

Twenty-two computers and an unknown number of laptops were damaged.
