Johannesburg - Three teenage girls were burnt to death and 23 injured when they jumped from a building at the North West School for the Deaf in Leeudoringstad which caught fire in the early hours of Monday morning.

The fire broke out at around 01:00 at the school's girls' hostel, North West police spokesperson Major Pelonomi Makau said.

"Three girls, aged 16, 17 and 18 burnt to death," he said.

"Twenty-three were injured due to jumping from the first floor of the building to the ground floor when they were trying to escape the fire."
