Johannesburg - Three people died and around 27 were injured when a bakkie veered off the N3 in Hilton and hit a tree on Sunday morning, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 paramedics, fire services, and other emergency services arrived on the scene and found six people still trapped in the twisted frame of the bakkie, Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

The three died from the extensive injuries they sustained, while three of the injured sustained life-threatening injuries. The remaining 24 people sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious.

The accident happened around 06:00.
Firemen used the Jaws of Life to free those trapped in the bakkie.
