Johannesburg - Three men have been arrested in Hercules, Pretoria, after a man and his wife were attacked and their house robbed, Gauteng police said on Sunday.

"It is alleged that the suspects were confronted [late Friday night] after a resident heard noise at his neighbour's house and alerted other community members," Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.

When the man went to investigate an armed man confronted him. He overpowered and disarmed the would-be robber.

Other residents caught another two men as they tried to run away. Their accomplices got away with the home owner's car and several household items. The car was later found abandoned in Atteridgeville.

Neighbours found the house owner and his wife had both been assaulted.

"They were both rushed to the local hospital... ," said Dlamini.

Police launched a manhunt to find the other robbers.
