Johannesburg - KwaZulu-Natal police say three people were arrested when more than 500kg of dagga was found in their bakkie on the N2 near Mtubatuba, KwaZulu-Natal.

Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said patrolling police pulled over the bakkie and searched it early Saturday.

"[Police] found empty beer crates loaded at the back of the bakkie and the members thought it was strange that they were conveying empty beer crates.
"They decided to conduct a thorough search.

"The police found 11 mealie meal bags full of dagga with an estimated street value of R2m under the crates."

The men, aged between 16 and 45, will appear in the Mtubatuba Magistrate's Court soon.
