Johannesburg – Two shipments of tik - crystal methamphetamine - from Lagos with an estimated street value of R29m have been confiscated at OR Tambo International Airport.

South African Revenue Service customs officers noticed three suitcases on a baggage carousel, the tags of which had been tampered with, spokesperson Luther Lebelo said in a statement on Tuesday.

None of the labels on the bags corresponded with anyone who had been on the flight from Nigeria.

After the bags were passed through a scanner, opened and searched, 17 packets containing tik worth about R18.6m were found wrapped in tin foil and cloth and covered in wigs.

Later on Tuesday, customs officers inspected several shipments declared to contain wigs from Lagos.

A sniffer dog reacted positively to drugs in the cargo. Tik with an estimated street value of R10.6m was found in false bottoms in two bags hidden in the consignment.
