Johannesburg - Tik with a street value of more than R8m was found hidden in the lining of a woman's baggage at OR Tambo International Airport, the SA Revenue Service said on Wednesday.

The woman, who had disembarked from a flight coming in from Dubai, was stopped and her bag scanned, said spokesperson Luther Lebelo.

"The customs officer grew suspicious as her bag only had a few items and yet was particularly heavy, so her luggage was sent for a further search."

After unpacking the bag, customs officers scanned it again and a concentrated matter was detected. Officers also noticed a strong scent of glue and decided to cut the lining, Lebelo said.

"They then discovered 26.8 kilograms of crystal meth, worth R8 040 000, concealed underneath the lining."

The matter was handed over to the police for further investigation.

This was the second seizure of tik at the airport in two days.

On Monday, a parcel arriving from India at the airport's mail centre was inspected and custom officers found 3.4kg of ephedrine, which is used to make tik, with a street value of R1m, said Lebelo.

The drugs were hidden in desk penholders.

Also on Monday, a sniffer dog at the airport reacted to a parcel destined for the United States. When it was inspected custom officers discovered 55.2kg of dried khat leaves with a street value of R36 818, said Lebelo.
