Time running out for R30m lottery winner

2011-08-03 15:34

Johannesburg - A Pretoria Powerball player who won R30.5m after randomly selecting six winning numbers only has two weeks to claim his or her jackpot.

The unknown punter’s millions will return to national lottery operator, Gidani, after 17:00 on August 17.

The ticket was bought in Pretoria for the August 17 2010 Powerball draw.

The buyer used the quick-pick option, which allows a punter to have five numbers and the Powerball number randomly picked.

Gidani spokeperson Thembi Tulwana said if by 17:00 on the day the jackpot remained unclaimed the winner would forfeit the millions.

“It’ll be used for marketing and other jackpots,” Tulwana said.

She said Gidani still hoped the winner would come forward, but time was running out.

“We’re waiting for him or her to claim the prize,” Tulwana said.

The Powerball, which started in October 2009, has created 29 millionaires while the Lotto and Lotto Plus has made 1 019 millionaires.

Gauteng has the most Powerball millionaires with 10.

All national lottery winners have 365 days to claim their prizes from the night of the draw.

Daai aap het lankal nie meer die kaartjie nie, seker vergeet om te kyk, of verloor, of verkeerd gecheck en weggegooi, want geen persoon sal nie eis nie........... wens dit was ek!!!

      Grayman - 2011-08-04 07:43

There is no winner. The owner of the ticket doesn't exist. My conspiracy theory is that Gidani creates bogus tickets because if one is not collected then the money goes back into their coffers. They SAY that the money will be used for marketing and boosting other jackpots. I doubt it. SA seems to have a disproportionate number of winners based on tickets sold and population vs the UK lottery. Mmmm Makes you Think, doesn't it?

      REALIST - 2011-08-04 09:44

Gidani is rigging their own system and there is nobody doing anything about it... as you said the statistics in comparison to other countries does not add up! I say... if there is an unclaimed ticket the unclaimed prize money should go to charity! Listen up Government... THE UNCLAIMED MONEY SHOULD GO TO CHARITY!

      James3000 - 2011-08-04 10:14

Come to think of it, my uncle Ned bought a ticket that day. Tried calling him but no answer.

      Kenko - 2011-08-04 11:25

Yup Grayman, I also think it's a scam. Don't know how, but electronic wizardry has no boundaries and they have something worked out.

  • ProsAndCons - 2011-08-04 08:41

Okay, I'm sorry, I lost it somewhere. I'm just on my way to the copshop to swear an affidavit, then I'm sure Gidani won't have a problem paying out. I mean, I can remember the date it was bought, and I live in Pretoria (area - sort of), surely that counts for something?

  • Ndividia - 2011-08-04 10:00

It is a shame that they dont give the venue where the ticket was bought. Then the winner can maybe know and starts seeking the winning ticket. Come on tell us where it was bought.

  • Chloe - 2011-08-04 10:09

Why is it impossible to play the powerball and lottery online via paypal or credit card. It's one helluva big deal toget tickets. People can play overseas lotteries with ease (wether it's through agencies, is not the point). Why don't they have a proper online site? It's always a case of deposit some monies from which you can use. That's a pathetic deal.

  • TGIL - 2011-08-04 11:28

OH PLAAAAAEASE MAN - corrupt scum. The whole thing is rigged. Marketing and other purposes! you people are retarded

  • K1d - 2011-08-04 11:45

if the money has been "won" then Gidani will have taken the debit to book & have no right to it - the money should be distributed the worthy charities; the homeless, the aged, underprivileged school's equipment, the spca - ggod knows there are enough of them... "marketing & other jackpots" > crap !

  • zackie - 2011-08-04 13:24

malema..we will nationalise the lotto and then buy the mines and lots of other stuff
