East London - Five men have been arrested in King William's Town for armed robbery, attempted murder, and possession of stolen property, Eastern Cape police said on Thursday.

Following a tip-off, police went to a house in Ndevana on Tuesday evening to arrest suspects who had allegedly committed armed robbery in the area, Lieutenant Siphokazi Mawisa said.

Three of the men ran away when they saw the police. Police gave chase and arrested one of them, a 20-year-old from Sweetwaters.

Another two, aged 20 and 25, fired shots at police as they fled. The younger man was later arrested near a river, while the 25-year-old was caught hiding in a house in the Cliff location.

Police found two firearms, ammunition, two Mandrax tablets, and an undisclosed amount of money on one of the men.

At the house in Ndevana, police arrested another two men for possession of stolen property. They found a sound system, 10 cellphones, and an amplifier.

All five men were expected to appear in the King Williams' Town Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
