Johannesburg - A 2-year-old girl and four adults were killed on Monday night when two cars collided head-on in Westonaria, west of Johannesburg, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said two men and two women and a toddler died at the scene of the accident along Main Road, which occurred at 21:16.

A 3-year-old girl survived the crash but was critically injured, Botha said.

"Paramedics worked fervently at the scene to stabilise the child before she was transported to a specialised facility under the constant care of an advanced life support paramedic."

The cause of the crash was unclear.
