Johannesburg - Six people including a toddler were killed, and four others were critically injured during a shooting at Chief Albert Luthuli informal settlement in Crystal Park, Benoni, Gauteng police said on Sunday.

Police spokesperson Katlego Mogale said a group of about 15 people armed with pistols and rifles shot at a group of people who were standing at a spaza shop in the area around 21:20 on Saturday.

"Several shots were fired into the shack wherein three males, two females and a baby girl were killed."

The girl was 2 years old.

Mogale said the four injured people were taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

The motive for the shootings were unclear. Police suspected that it might be related to illegal mining, Mogale said.

The shooters were still at large.
