Johannesburg - A toddler was killed when she was run over by a car in Honeydew, west of Johannesburg, on Thursday, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said the 3-year-old girl was hit by a Toyota RunX as she got off a minibus taxi on Paul Kruger Street with her mother around noon.

It was not clear where the girl was standing when she was hit. Paramedics tried to save her life, but she died from her injuries.

The woman driving the RunX was in severe shock, but otherwise unhurt.

I'm about to cry this is sad.

      Carla - 2012-01-05 22:33

Very sad. but with taxis just stopping in the middle of road to drop passengers in so unsafe and hazardous

      Silver - 2012-01-06 07:28

Not only that but even at schools. I’ve almost run over a few. They just run over the street from behind taxis and buses while “teachas” stand there doing nothing. Of course you are “racist” pointing out any potentially life threatening actions but hey, there are many more children right?

Execute the taxi driver we will discuss the merit of the case later

Parents need to be very careful now days, RIP little girl. - 2012-01-06 09:16

where was the mother of this child wen she was knocked over? Isnt she supposed to be holding her hand wen she crosses? Ignorant mother too, and the taxi is just as bad. RIP little one

Very sad story indeed, however, Paul Kruger is a single lane road with quite a few blind rises and bends and the taxis just stop anywhere on this road. Never once have I seen a JMPD vehicle on this road pulling taxis over for just stopping. They have caused many of the accidents on Paul Kruger. Hamba Kahle little one!

Okay, there 's something that's puzzling me. All the passenger exits are on the left hand side of the taxi do if the taxi pulled over to the left the run-x would have been driving on the pavement or shoulder of the road. Seems like mister taxi driver stopped in the middle of the road so he is directly responsible for these deaths

Whenever I see mothers with little ones standing or walking next to the road specially in the road where I live, I slow down to a crawl. You never know when that little one decides to make a run for it and it can happen in a split second. RIP little girl and condolences to her family.

      Wollie - 2012-01-06 09:31

Agreed, I always do the same. Also drive past a primary school on a daily basis and always slow down. What really infuriates me though is that some idiot then sits on your tail or flashes their lights. For f-sake, I am just slowing down past the school! I have actually pointed the school out to thses drivers and have received a few apologies.

3 year todler killed by car where mother was "somhere around" ?!?! Mothers as such must be transported to Lion Park at feed time!!!! Is not about the Minibus Taxi or the driver of the Toyota RunX. It's all about mother's fault. Some people doesn't deserve to have kids.......

  • Snoopsy - 2012-01-06 08:07

This is tragic, the mom should be held responsible, but the lady driving the car will get full blame.

  • Beulah - 2012-01-06 08:23

    So sad

  • Jason - 2012-01-06 08:38

Sad indeed - Taxi doors open on the left side for passengers only, so once again the Taxi is to blame as I can bet that he had stopped where he shouldnt have, as we know they are above the law and have the right to stop where ever they please!! hang the driver!!

  • Emma - 2012-01-06 09:10

she should have jumped off the taxi before the little gal,now she is gone we cant judge her mother.may her soul rest in peace.Beware jump first and carry a child after you ladies.

      Henk - 2012-01-06 10:43

Actually, it is LOOK first. Don't you just hate it when people wander around on the road, seemingly oblivious of the danger they put themselves in? It's an offence to jaywalk in other countries, but over here the pedestrians just don't care and trust that motorists will always be able to avoid them. In this case, the taxi driver as well as the mother is to blame.

so jundgemental on the poor mother - do you think she wanted her child to die? do you know how fast these things happen? maybe she was carrying a baby or smaller toddler. unfortunately these people are not protected like the wealthier section of our society - they rely on public transport - no expensive seats in the back of luxury cars which then get parking privileges in the malls - since when are mothers of small children helpless? I managed my two toddlers and parked where I could - not right outside of the mall unless I was very lucky. Before judging thing of the circumstances and the grief of the mother. Oh, and kids are unpredictable - I was hit by a kombi at the age of four - despite my mother telling me NOT to leave the front garden, I darted out and into the road - result a broken femur, fractured skull and 6 weeks in hospital in traction - it was my fault, not my mother's fault, despite only being 4 I did know what the words DO NOT meant!

Sad story. How many young kids does one see wandering around on their own, and in close proximity to busy roads. The parents seem oblivious to the dangers and 'sort of' expect the drivers to avoid their kids. The parents are responsable and accountable, as well as the taxi driver who appears to have not stopped in a safe place where his passengers could exit safely. RIP little one.

      Maropeng - 2012-01-06 11:15

We always quick to blame the taxi drivers, have you travelled in a taxi before? if a passengers wants to get off, there isn't much a driver can do but stop. the mom did scream to the ki asking her not to cross, toddler a full of anergy and are forever wondering about. we shouldn't be pointing finger.

  • Karabo - 2012-01-06 11:02

Very sad, I sympathize with the mother and family members. May God see you through this and heal your broken hearts.

  • dmaloma - 2012-01-06 11:33

I blame the taxi driver because these drivers stop anywhere on the roads and they even force passengers to get off while the traffic light is going to be green in a second. it's like they think they own the roads of S.A. RIP little one

  • jaecqueline - 2012-01-06 14:57

This is so sad the poor girl. These taxi's stopping randomly when evr and where ever does nothing to better the whole situation. I make a point of driving slower and more careful around taxi's (even if i am demoer in) when it just stops right infront of me, nothing happens to them but the poor passengers.
