Johannesburg - A post mortem of a 2-year-old girl allegedly raped by her father's friend showed the rape was unrelated to her death, Limpopo police said on Wednesday.

"Doctors who conducted the post mortem confirmed that the girl died of natural causes," Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.

The 2-year-old was believed to have died of a stomach ailment on Friday.

"A 29-year-old man who allegedly raped [the] two-year-old girl has been arrested and will be making his next appearance tomorrow [Thursday] at Maake Magistrate's Court."

The man was arrested on 2 March following a raid on a flat in Yeoville, Johannesburg.

He allegedly raped the 2-year-old in late February and left her for dead in bushes near Pulaneng village, Limpopo, after abducting her two weeks earlier.

The 2-year-old was admitted to hospital following the rape. She was discharged and contracted the stomach ailment between hospital visits.

Mulaudzi urged residents not to take the law into their own hands.

"We have reason to believe that community members might take the law into their own hands.

"As police, we appeal to the community to not do so as their will be consequences," he said.

"The case is still proceeding."
