Johannesburg - Three men were jailed for life by the Limpopo High Court on Thursday for the murder of Congress of the People (Cope) MP Jack Tolo, Limpopo police said.

Police spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi said Peter Motebele, 36, was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and 20 years for housebreaking and robbery.

Oscar Choma, 33, was sentenced to life imprisonment and 15 years, and Alpheus Molepo, 46, was sentenced to life and 25 years.

A fourth man, King Solomon Nkosi, 40, also implicated in the murder, was still in hospital under police guard for a serious chronic illness.

He would be tried alone after he recuperated.

Seven people were initially arrested for the crime.

Three were later acquitted.

Tolo was murdered at his home in Ga-Masha, Sekhukhune, on 21 August 2011.

His family was tied up before he was shot, and the attackers demanded money, jewellery, and cellphones.

His cellphone was later recovered from one the men.

Cope in Limpopo said it was satisfied with the outcome of the trial.

"We are pleased with the investigative work of the police to a large extent," said spokesperson Motlatjo Thetjeng.

"We still believe that more could have been done that would have ensured that the other three that were acquitted were also put behind bars for life."
