Top Paralympian's medals stolen

2012-12-14 08:43

Johannesburg - One of South Africa’s top Paralympian athletes was left heartbroken after the two medals she won earlier this year at the Paralympic Games were stolen from her.

Anruné Liebenberg, 20, wrote on Facebook: “Please pray. My medals were stolen out of my bag…at the airport!!!! A chain prayer will be necessary…Please LORD JESUS help. [sic]”

Liebenberg won a silver medal in the 400m and bronze in 200m at the Paralympic Games in London in August.

She was travelling with SA Express Airways on Thursday from George to Johannesburg. From there she drove to Kroonstad where she was guest speaking at an event, reported Beeld.

Her medals set off the safety alarms in George and she had to unpack her bag.

She said she kept her bag with her at all times.

“I slept on the plane and pushed my bag under my seat.”

She only realised the medals were gone when she reached Kroonstad.

“I don’t know why someone would take them? It is something that I worked four years for.”

Her father, Rudi asked: “What is anyone going to do with those medals? My child is heartbroken and now she still has to talk in Kroonstad.”

A reward of R5 000 has been offered for the return of the medals.

  • A previous version of this article stated that Liebenberg flew on SA Airlink. News24 apologises for the error.

What kind of sicko steals a medal from a paralympian? Imagine how Ironic it would would be that medal mysterious leads to a freak accident and that person ends up being disabled.

The only ones who would have known that the medals were there was the security guard who searched the bag. He most likely tipped off the cabin crew that there was something worth stealing.

That exactly how they do it. They were into a similar scam on SAA. I alerted them to it, including who the perpetrators were. They chose not to bother. 2 flights later same crook still standing there trying to steal from passengers. Not long before they will steal the complete plane. Starting with the tyres......

I had three medals stolen from my home. Completely ireplaceable and quite worthless to anyone who didn't go through the sweat to win Royal Airforce National Small Bore Shooting Championships (all three competitions in the same year). Definitely not in the class of Olympic medals...but really significant to me. And yes they were gold, but gold coloured. My only satisfaction was hoping that the b*stard that took them got flayed when he tried to sell them. Still, as they say, you cannot take stuff with you when you go.....but I am not offering to all comers in the meantime!

This lady must get the cops to interrogate the person sitting directly behind her on the plane.

  • PrettyUsefulArt - 2012-12-14 10:45

I wonder if the Olympics committee make allowance for instances such as this? One would hope so.

It is really sad to know that someone would steal her medals. I use to coach Anrune at Hockey and she is such an inspiration to everyone she comes in touch with. Anrune I pray that they find your medals. You worked DAMN hard for them.

It's one of the passengers whom saw her unpack her bag in George and coincidentally was sitting behind her in the plane. Saw her put the bag under the seat and ....bye bye bronze !
