Pretoria - A top official in the Tshwane Metro Police Department and his family were hijacked and taken hostage in Equestria, Pretoria, according to social media on Friday.

The incident appears to have taken place late on Thursday but a post on a Facebook page, All SAPS & CPFs in SA, confirmed on Friday morning that the family – the official, his wife and two children, were safe.

However, the car was still not found by midnight.

According to Twitter, the family was driving in a VW Toureg.

Tshwane metro police spokesperson Isaac Mahamba said that "from the department side, we don't want to confirm or deny [the incident] at this stage".
