Top athlete shot in farm attack

2012-09-25 10:07

Pretoria - Former hurdles champion Karen Harmse (formerly Wilkinson) has survived after being shot by robbers during a farm attack in Rustenburg.

“Everything happened so quickly… I see it happening over and over again in my mind,” Harmse, 46, told Beeld.

Harmse was the South Africa and Africa champion in the 100m hurdles in the 1990s and represented SA at the Olympic Games in Atlanta.

She was the second South African sporting legend to become a victim of crime over the weekend after former boxing heavyweight champion Corrie Sanders was shot dead on Saturday evening at a restaurant in Brits.

Harmse’s partner, Nols de Wet, said they had feared a farm attack was coming after the family dogs were poisoned last week.

Harmse was attacked and shot at when she got out of her car at the farmhouse at about 20:00 on Friday night.

“When [one of the robbers] made me lie down in the house, I felt my shoulder wouldn’t move. Only once I felt the bullet hole and saw the blood did I realise I had been shot.”

The gang of about five robbers made the rest of the family lie down while they took cellphones, computers, wallets and cars.

Harmse needed stitches to her head and the injured bone, muscles and tendons in her shoulder.

Police are investigating a case of armed robbery and housebreaking.

The whites must wake up, they are living in ignorance. Their dogs were poisoned, they expected an attack and still got attacked. Why did you not set a deadly ambush for this primitive trash, you had the advantage. Majority of whites dont want to speak about the white killings, its the hardest thing for them to accept, time to become vigilant and arm yourselves, you are not living in europe or australia

      JHLR73 - 2012-09-25 11:04

And we read the same comments on news 24 over and over and over again. Just like these attacks happen over and over and over again since 1994. Nothing is been done because we have become a pathetic careless and a useless nation. If we cared enough , we would have done more. But white South Africans can not stand together. In return they get massacared. The more we do nothing, the more this will happen because we can not stand together. Get use to reading this on a daily basis,or pack your bags and leave. It does not seem that there is another choice. Last option is to wait until it is your or your families turn. The choice is yours.

Quite literally it is coming to the stage where one should say to oneself stuff the law - you are on my property uninvited and I will shoot you - enough is enough.

      zuma you Fired!!!!! - 2012-09-25 11:24

The whites on farms must start relocating to cities, will be easier to stand together and mobilize when needed. You will then also have the protection of armed response companies and the police... much easier to protect yourselves in an urban environment. ITS TIME for you farmers to seriously consider this, not first choice, but safer than living on a farm... or perhaps get a farm in the western cape.

the farmers had protection, they were called commandos, but the ANC disbanded convenient for the criminals!

Firstly I would just like to place on record that I hope Karen makes a full recovery although the mental scars will most likely last forever, secondly, I struggle to deal with the fact that if they expected an attack coming why where they not prepared, this would have made a big differance to the mental attitude to these scum of the earth farm attackers !

      richard.hipkin - 2012-09-25 10:21

I agree craig, did they inform the police, did they inform farm watch, was extra vigilance practised? I hope so...

      eyesears.handsfeet - 2012-09-25 12:57

      1) It would have made no difference whatsoever even if the police were informed of the poisoned dogs. 2) If they defended themselves they would have been found guilty because the argument would have read - premeditated, therefor how do you fix a (-) up law system that only benifits the one, but not the other?

      monicque.herbst - 2012-09-25 15:37

I agree - informing the cops does absolutely nothing! I had a break-in when I lived in Fourways in Feb 2011 and the cops (all black) came around about an hour later, walked all through my house, poking into every damn corner unnecessarily. We did the required paperwork and they left. I strongly suspected the gated community's security company, I think it was ADT, at the time, due to earlier incidents on mine and surrounding properties. When I followed up at the cop station a few days later, the paperwork could not be found, etc. In short, absolutely nothing was done. They just go through the motions to make it look like they're doing a good job. In reality, they don't give a stuff. Meanwhile, some scumbag made off with sentimental jewellery items and an ancient 8 year old laptop without even taking the power cord!! I wouldn't even bother with the cops, I say COMMANDO'S ALL THE WAY!!! With some serious firepower...

My sympathies to Karen - and I hope she makes a full recovery. I think back to farmers in Zim in the 70's when terrorist attacks were rife. The farmers were all in contact with each other via radio telephone and had an efficient defence network. Surely, if it's not the case here, it should be? Knowing that they're on vulnerable, isolated properties, can't SA farmers organise themselves with proper stockades and radio/phone links? Just a thought......

      merven.halo - 2012-09-25 11:32

  • simphiwe.buthelezi.71 - 2012-09-25 10:55

Tragic and I'm not sure if blaming the govt will take us anywhere. Why don't we mobilise as citizens as the constitution allows us to do so? Farmers should have compulsory minimum standards of security measures in their homes that they should adhere to. I'm black but I don't approve what's happening so people should never bundle blacks together. Govt will only react, police cannot be on each farm all the time and if they are there they will only be reacting to cases. This is disgusting and I don't see govt solving it but only farmers themselves.

      croix.mactee - 2012-09-25 11:42

Farmers had an excellent system called "commandos". The GOVERNMENT abolished it and promised something better to replace it. Did it happen? NOOO! So WHO is to blame then? I do agree that the time for self-preservation has come - come on, surely there're a couple of experienced leaders out there who could put together a plan and start a brand new commando-system. Tyd vir suiwer, selfsugtige eie-belang!

      nelie.vanaardt - 2012-12-22 19:15

You are so right, the farmers should take more caution. I must say that since I am back here since beginning November everything just goes on so normal, even I feel quite at ease while we know that the lives of our people (All our people) are being threatened, people nlive is squallor while Gov. spends "Family" money. I connot see why anybody still vote for the ANC. I think we must start a new group, run this Country as though it is a bussiness and not a welfare organisation where the leaders will fly in ordinary commercial planes,(maybe Business Class" earn reasonable wages, apply for a job instead of being part of the party, qualify for the job, turn up for work and meetings, if any corruption comes up, being fired on the spot without a FAT pension, being forced to pay back what they stole from the Taxpayers etc. etc. ...Dream Dream the Impossible dream!......

While farmers and all other normal people of every colour struggle to make ends meet, that FAT F@*K lives like King Herod! But no, the scales that cover the criminals and the general mass's eyes are thick, and thickened more still through the ridiculous yet dangerous hate speech of those imbecilic leaders. UNITE SOUTH AFRICA. UNITE ONE AND ALL! UNLESS YOU MAKE AN EFFORT TO JOIN HANDS WITH EVERY SINGLE LAW ABIDING CITIZEN DURING YOUR DAY, WE CANNOT GET THIS COUNTRY MOVING FORWARD AND UPWARD. A successful country can only be built when we stop promoting one race above another. If the apartheid government had killed as many blacks as the blacks marauders have killed farmers and white civilians post apartheid, then this would normally be labeled GENOCIDE! Look at the numbers and tell me that I am wrong. This GOVERNMENT OF NATIONAL UNITY is a sick joke. They make a few noises and do nothing. We currently live amongst a nation of barbarians. How can ANY(black, brown.white or yellow) family survive this daily onslaught? If we do not have a government which is WISE AND MORAL to the core and acts in the interests of ALL it's people, then ANARCHY AND CHAOS WILL ABOUND. Just as it does right now! Our society is POLARISED and in a very dangerous situation. Choose your leaders carefully next time you get to vote! Don't be blinded by empty promises.

Rosette, I'm not going to vote DA.Recently Cape Town Mayor De Lille was asked why the arfirmative action policy of the Cape Town municiplity are causing White people to be underrepresented as employees in the council. She then asked FF councilor Fourie where he had been for 350 years... The DA did nothing (and supported the ANC) when Pre-apartheid Afrikaner history was destroyed in Pretoria, when street names like Louis Botha (who played an important role in the unification of our country, and who was a statesman with a great reputation throughout the commonwealth) were changed. The DA is also silent as far as farm murders and hate speech such as \kill the boer\ is concerned. It is therefore clear that the DA is an opportunistic party, not one with values that would encourage a country where we can all be equals free from racial discrimination...90% of Whites are stupid enough to support the DA, the extra 10% will not make a difference.Whites as a group cannot make a difference. We are a tiny and shrinking minority with absolutely no political power.Zille cannot save us, and please look at European countries-most of them have coalition governments, meaning people vote for a party on values, not because it is the biggest opposition party.Every vote counts in South Africa's proportional system.Vote for a party that protects your interest, and that can then form part of a coalition government that can one day hopefully replace the ANC.

There is only one answer and that is to take the law into our own hands and deal with the trash! Government lacks both the ability and the will to address the crime situation, they can only provide lip service. If anything I believe they support it, it`s a way of reditribution and providing an income to the unemployed masses! If we as white people, along with any one else wanting to live in a crime free society actually stood together against corruption, incompetence and crime, government would have no alternative but to address the situation! We as tax payers have the power, what can government do if we all start enforcing law and order or withhold taxes or refuse to pay levy`s etc thereby forcing local government and municipality`s to clean up their act or go bankrupt! What can they do, arrest all of us? The problem is we have become too docile, too programmed with the whole guilt aspect of the past thereby giving up our rights as South Africans! Untill we change our attitudes the system will progrssively just get worse, time to take a stance, time to be African and kill or be killed! I know it sounds archaic but we live in a neanderthal society where life has no value and our weaknesses will only be exploited and used against us!
