A STAFF member of a popular Pietermaritzburg tote was wounded after he was stabbed repeatedly during a brazen armed robbery yesterday.

One man was caught and three more are on the run from police after the gang of four men stormed into the Gold Circle Tab Gold betting facility on New England Road yesterday.

According to police sources, the men, armed with a revolver and knives, entered the facility yesterday morning and demanded cash.

In the midst of screams and shouts, the men allegedly ordered all patrons and staff members to lie face down on the ground and cover their eyes before making their way directly to the tills in the bar area.

According to police sources, the men attacked a senior staff member, stabbing him in the back and the stomach, before emptying the tills and escaping on foot with the cash in black backpacks which they were carrying. It is unclear how much money was taken.

The Combined Action Team (CAT) and Alexandra police responded to the incident and tried to track down the men. Following the Dusi river banks behind the Golden Horse Casino, members of CAT found one man hiding in the bushes.

The man was found near the Manor area and had a knife in his backpack but no cash. CAT members took the man into custody and hauled him straight back to the crime scene, where he was identified as one of the robbers by victims of the attack.

The Witness spoke to a frantic man who said he was one of the patrons present during the robbery. Although he declined to speak about exactly what happened, he said he “had never experienced anything like that before”.

“You watch things like this happening on TV and you don’t think it will ever happen to you. It was the most terrifying thing; I can’t tell you how scared I was. I thought they were just there for the money so they would not hurt anybody,” the man said.

He refrained from commenting any further and said he was still in a state of panic.

This is not the first Gold Circle betting facility that has been targeted by brazen thieves this year.

Last month, The Witness reported about R100 000 in cash which was stolen from the safe at a Pietermaritzburg Tab Gold betting centre in Greyling Street during the early hours of June 8.

The burglars entered the betting centre through the roof and made their way straight to the safe before escaping with the loot. No arrests have been made in that incident as yet.

Gold Circle was asked to comment yesterday, however, they were unable to respond before print deadline.

The Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson was also unable to comment on the incident
