George - An Austrian tourist was rescued by an unknown man near Plettenberg Bay on Wednesday, said the National Sea Rescue Institute.

"At 13:52 NSRI Plettenberg Bay volunteer duty sea rescue crew were activated following reports of a drowning in progress at The Island at Robberg Nature Reserve," said spokesperson Craig Lambinon.

Hildegard Weisseneder, 70, was reportedly hiking with her husband and daughter when she ran into difficulties in the water while crossing a channel.

Lambinon said an unknown bystander hiking on the trail apparently rescued her from the water and left before rescue services arrived.

Weissender showed signs of near-drowning. She was transferred to a local hospital after receiving treatment at the scene and was in a stable condition.

Were his underpants over his trousers? Did he have a cape and a big "S" his shirt? This man was the REAL superman!!!! A real hero!!! give the man a double BELLS!

A man I admire for that is a good example to all those who "help" others. Do your deed and walk away. A hug or a thank you is all that is needed. Real hero's do it on the spur of the moment without thought of glory and feel real good for helping another.

Not Superman, Just a typical Plettonian, It's a closely guarded secret, that we live in the most beautiful, caring, and helpful society, with the rot that seems to have engulfed the rest of our country has not taken a foothold here yet.

Nah guys, he ran away as he feared being arrested for performing his civic duty and also for not robbing the victim blind afterwards. Thanks to the Unknown Hero for proving there is still humanity left in SA.

Wondeful "underpants" reference, but that Hero wouldn't touch a "Bells" or any other alcohol.

Well done to the man who saved the tourist. At least some good news about South Africa will filter back to Europe.
