Traditional affairs employee held for fraud

2012-10-04 09:56

Johannesburg - A department of traditional affairs employee was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly defrauding fellow employees of their severance packages in KwaZulu-Natal, the department said.

It is alleged the employee defrauded the department of millions of rand as he had been running the scam for a number of years, said departmental spokesperson Vernon Mchunu.

"The department believes that thousands of... employees may have been swindled..."

The employee was expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Nomusa Dube welcomed the arrest.

"This work reaffirms our commitment to root out corruption and fraud, not only in municipalities, but also within our own backyard if it dares crop up," she said in a statement.
