Traffic to KZN increases

Durban - Holiday makers were heading towards KwaZulu-Natal in their droves on Friday as traffic authorities reported heavy traffic on the main arterial route into the province.

KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said that between 16:00 and 17:00, 1 303 vehicles were recorded passing through the Tugela toll plaza on the N3 near Ladysmith while during the same hour, 1 427 vehicles passed through the tolls at Mooi River.

At the same time, the northbound traffic for Tugela toll plaza recorded 548 vehicles per hour and 888 an hour for Mooi River.

At the Wilge toll plaza in the Free State on the N3, there were 1 162 vehicles an hour heading south and at the De Hoek toll plaza in Gauteng on the N3, there were 1 182 vehicles heading south towards KwaZulu-Natal between 16:00 and 17:00.

The start of the long weekend traffic run was marred early on when three pupils and a woman were killed when the bus they were travelling in collided with a truck near Ballito on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast.

Mngomezulu urged motorists to drive carefully and act responsibly.
