Cape Town - A Hanover Park father’s biggest nightmare became a reality after family members identified the body of a young woman found on the mountains above Kalk Bay as that of his daughter.

Michaela Adriaanse, 16, went missing last Thursday. She was last seen in Muizenberg.

According to Netwerk24, Adriaanse had an argument with a friend on the beach and walked off. A man was reportedly seen following her.

Western Cape police confirmed to News24 that a suspect has been taken into custody.

Police spokesperson Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana told the Cape Argus the body found on the mountain had “extensive injuries”.

Michaela's father said he hadn't eaten or slept since she went missing.

Her aunt, Cherene Smith, thanked Kalk Bay locals for their help in searching for the teenager. She said more than 100 people turned out on Friday to help look for her.

The family was able to identify her body in the mortuary. Her backpack and the sneakers she was wearing were found with the body, Smith said.

“Michaela was always so happy and cheerful. She was never in a bad mood,” said one of her sisters, Jodie.

The 36-year-old suspect from Steenberg will appear in the Muizenberg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, Kinana told News24.
