Train driver stabbed to death

2012-12-26 19:07

Johannesburg - A train driver was stabbed to death outside Hercules station in Pretoria, Metrorail said on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Lillian Mofokeng said the driver identified as JP Du Plessis was found dead on Tuesday, with several stab wounds in a static train.

"The cause of this incident is not yet clear and will be fully investigated with immediate effect," said spokesperson Lillian Mofokeng. Metrorail Gauteng provincial manager Tembela Kulu said train services would be suspended in Gauteng on New Year's Day in honour of Du Plessis.

She said as a preventative measure, all trains would operate until 18:00 in Gauteng for the festive season until 4 January.

This country is rotten. Condolences to the man's family

      Tuyez - 2012-12-26 19:33

I believe this is driven by high unemploment rate and lack of education. Other people find it easy to be criminals that they end up involved in criminal actuvities. Governmet should cut down on tenders as millions are spent on individuals instead of distributing to the poor people. Govern should consider investing in industrilisation instead. That how crime will be reduced.

      kortbroek.duplessis - 2012-12-27 02:23

Lack of education? I am tired of a lack of education being used as a excuse for such savage behavior. Just how educated must one be to know that butchering your fellow human beings are wrong. Bottom line is that we have savages, sub humans walking amongst us, and they should be put down like rabid dogs, they cannot be educated to function in human society

my point exactly, no one knows y he was stabbed it doesnt even say on the article. so y would some fool want to go and cut throats actually who's throat do u want to cut? your racist comments only show the lack of intelligence that you have. your comments are neither amusing nor hold any substance. you better wake up baba yu just one of the sad minority of people trying to push some useless propaganda about race we are not interested in. this goes out to both black and white racist you are satanic, dont know a good thing and you should all go hang. normal south africans are tired of your b.s

      rude.awakning - 2012-12-27 07:14

ian, your above comment smacks of racism! You are obviously not mentioning a race but all knows who's throats you are refering to! Every country on earth has crime as an issue to deal with! The socio economics of your neighbouring population will determine who's more likely to commit crime where you stay! Maybe an arab country practicing 'shariah law' would be a good place to live in unless you are one of those that hate them people too.!

      burningdogz - 2012-12-27 08:49

@Sbuda, if you bothered reading the other comments who would have noticed that this Boere.Fool, is a fake account. There is no such person. Based on his name, exaggerated overuse of exclamation marks and the fact that he used the word Boer in the wrong context (meaning his Afrikaans is definitaly not on par with an afrikaans speaking boer) it is clear that the post was not even made by an afrikaner. The colour of the poster is for you to find out. The fact of the matter is very simple though, this person made that post as a troll for the sake of getting people worked up. Don't bother debating what he said, he might as well have given himself a Xhosa name and typed something about the genocide of Zimbabweans, morons like that kick their kicks from causing a bit of chaos. I do like the fact that you are talking about white and black racists, this tells me of mutual respect, something few and far between when it comes to worked up posters, and I do appreciate that.

If you feel the need to rob, rob another robber. If you feel the need to kill, kill another killer. Please leave the rest of us alone to build this country. Cowardly, useless, insane, klingons circling Uranus. Every single criminal. And not enough toilet paper to wipe them straight to Hell.

It is painfull to loose a family member by violent means. My sincere condelences to the bereaved family. We need to put our focus on Metrorail. What security measures are in place to protect the train drivers and their staff in general? Is the investigation going to be made public? I think there is more to the story than what we are told by Metrorail spin doctors.we must stop attacking one another along the racial lines while the real culprit (Metrorail) is going scot free. Let us point all our attacks to Metrorail as a means of preventing crime and protecting lives at the workplace. Criminals are oppoortunistic, they will always look for the loopholes to strike. It is the duty of Metrorail to be always a step ahead of crime. Let the traindriver not die in vain.

  • patnkhuna - 2012-12-27 00:19

Deepest condolences to the family of the train drive... Why when something bad happens to a white person, all fingers point to the black people as the number one suspects? This has nothing to do with race, so let's stop pulling the race card and pointing fingers without all facts and evidence. At this point the blame must go to PRASA, they should know better that the protection of their employees and passengers should come 1st...

Let us report crime and make sure our environments are cleansed of vermin.

Deepest condolences to the family and friends of Du Plessis! Very sad that a lunatic act in that way. A week ago i wrote to Prasa and metrorail for the 3rd time abt safety of their passenger, personnel and property and they dont seem to be caring. And im still challenging them on OHSA Occupational Health and Safety Act. No no no, minister please do something!!!

      rude.awakning - 2012-12-27 07:30

what i find difficult to digest is that money was spent on building police stations on railway stations and SAP has as railway wing in addition to private security at stations! Metro has an obligation to ensure a safe environment for both passenger and employee! Maybe a class action suit will force them to apply their mind and resources!

All I can say is: Looking at the comments made, this country is in deep trouble. Everyone wants to play the race card without really knowing all the facts. The deep rooted racist hatred on both sides is getting to me, false profiles or not. This cannot be conducive to harmony in this country.

      sonia.swarts - 2012-12-27 09:09

David, yes you are right. People are hurt. They are disappointed. They don't know what the truth is and we certainly feel we can't trust anymore. Poverty = desperate decisions = life changing circumstances. Everybody is talking, pointing fingers yet the people who are able to say this is where it stops are looking in a different direction. We need to unite the whole country first and give each and every individuals life the respect it deserves. Start focusing on the basic fundamentals being food, housing, jobs, safety and health care and education. Once we have done this we can build the country. People no matter what color no matter what Ethnical group need stability!

Sad indeed. May his soul rest in peace. My problem starts when the Metro rail Officials prounced the suspension of trains in honour of the Du Plessis's death. I find this not only disturbing, but unproffessional and one-sided. This year, there was also a female train Driver, cargo train, who happened to be black, who was killed on duty, there was no suspension in her honour. Besides that fact, how can you do just suspend trains having not done any investigation? What if Du Plessis, was involved in a criminal acivity that went sour? Please, officials should be level-headed at all times, taking responsible desicions at all times. In that, we can trust all the judgements passed.

  • flysouth - 2012-12-27 12:45
