Johannesburg - The trial of Lindrey Khakhu, 22, accused of shooting dead Westbury toddler Luke Tibbetts, was postponed in the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg, sitting in Palm Ridge, on Monday.

The trial was postponed to Wednesday, 4 March, as two witnesses were not available on Monday.

Khakhu faces a total of 18 charges, ranging from murder to attempted murder and the illegal possession of a firearm.

Khakhu allegedly shot and wounded Tibbetts on 2 August. Tibbetts was placed on life support but died in hospital on 8 August.

Khakhu was arrested after people who witnessed the shooting identified him and reported to police.

In August last year, investigating officer Sergeant Diedelof Fourie told the Newlands Magistrate's Court that Khakhu and Keenan Mokwena had an argument on the day of the shooting in Westbury, Johannesburg.

Mokwena was accused of pointing a firearm that led to the crossfire shooting that resulted in Tibbetts's death,

Khakhu allegedly retaliated and fired shots at Mokwena, who was driving a vehicle at the time. A stray bullet hit Tibbetts, who was travelling with his mother in a passing car.

In October, Mokwena, 28, was released after admitting guilt and paying a fine.

He was sentenced to 12 months in jail or a R3 000 fine. He opted to pay the fine and was released thereafter.
