Cape Town - The owner of Osi’s Place tavern in Khayelitsha is set to appear before a tribunal which will decide whether to suspend his liquor licence, following a stampede that left scores dead.

The Western Cape Liquor Authority’s Phillip Prinsloo said the hearing would take place at their office in Bellville at 09:00 on Thursday and the owner was expected to make an appearance with legal representation.

“The liquor licensing tribunal normally makes a decision immediately but it depends on how long the hearing is,” he told News24 on Wednesday.

“After tomorrow (Thursday), they can decide whether there are grounds or a basis for a bigger hearing in which they have the option to revoke the licence, amend its conditions or impose a fine.”

The authority received a report from the police last week and Prinsloo said this would form part of proceedings.

The hearing was open to the public, but space was limited.

Six people died just over a week ago after a metal railing on a set of outside stairs gave way. Two more were killed when the vehicle they were transported in crashed on the way to hospital.

Witnesses claim a fight broke out and shots were fired, leading to the stampede.

Police opened an inquest docket.
