Trio guilty of gunning down grape farmer

2012-09-14 10:36

Cape Town - Three men were found guilty of gunning down Stellenbosch grape farmer Alberto Costa on his veranda last February, it was reported on Friday.

The Cape Times reported that Mfundiso Yese, Simamkele Mralaza and Cedrick Vusumzi Mphakathi were convicted of murder and housebreaking with intent to commit robbery, in the Western Cape High Court on Thursday.

Judge Andre le Grange found the men acted with a common purpose and met in advance to plan the robbery.

Costa's death in the early hours of February 18 2011 sparked upheaval in the farming community, amid a spate of burglaries and robberies in the area.

His wife Zelda told the newspaper she was now a single mother to two children and also had to keep her husband's four farms running.

"It sounds so clichéd, but it doesn't matter what happens to them [the men found guilty], nothing will bring him back."

The fourth man convicted of Costa's murder, Vizicelo Madolo, took a plea bargain in June and was sentenced to 20 years in jail.

The sentencing of his three accomplices was expected to begin on Tuesday.

I've read so many of these articles and 80% of the time its always a Yese, Mralaza, Vusumzi or Mphakathi, the same as the latest slayings of old white people and the young white girl.... living among demons!

      zambezi.river - 2012-09-14 11:42

'also had to keep her husband's four farms running'..........I rest my case!

      jack.blacking.56 - 2012-09-14 11:53

@Zambezi....Headline Today "Starving govt-owned cattle put down" Thank god they're looking after those 4 farms.

      shakes.tshabala - 2012-09-14 12:10

@Zambezi. Yes, Its FOUR farms, so what? Did he steal it from others or did he kill others in order to get it. He worked for it. That is the mentality of many of you, thats why GOD does'nt grant you wealth. The majority are COLD BLOODED MURDERERS, but remember GOD will punish you in HELL. I am also BLACK and my culture are the same as yours but GOD gave me a healthy brain to distinguish between right and wrong.

      hendrik.verwoerd.94 - 2012-09-15 07:55

This is because News 24 mostly publish reports that will let blacks look bad. So that all whites can agree and give the thumbs up. 80% of the country's population is black, that is why you will expect 80% of criminals are black. Is that so difficult to understand.

It seems that the farmers get more special cartegory in our constitution than ordinary citizens. A murder on the farm and the one in Alexadria township should be treated the same in the eyes of the law. We did not fight for others to have more rights, than the majority!

      gareth.perkins.52 - 2012-09-14 11:06

      Stop F(&*^&^ killing the Farmers!!!!!!!

      Tobie Vd Vyver - 2012-09-14 11:19

Your intelligence, or rather the lack thereof, amazes me. You cannot compare old people being hacked to death by four or more low life scum to a drunken brawl in Alexandra that happens now and then. Every week farmers are murdered, can you say the same for the rest? No! The farmers produce our food and you people are too stupid to realise it. I also never heard our incompetent government saying to stop the farm murders - why? Because maybe that's their hidden agenda?

      millionwatts1 - 2012-09-14 11:33

You are 100% right Phumi. Crime is crime is crime.

      sanda.mnyazi - 2012-09-14 12:01

Tobie if you think people are killed now and again in Alex then you are a bigger idiot than Phumi........

      sanda.mnyazi - 2012-09-14 12:02

The only difference is that farm killings get more media coverage than township killings, next time please dont make ill informed comments, im glad these idiots are going away for a very long time but i would've preferred death by stoning for them

      jack.blacking.56 - 2012-09-14 12:07

@phumi.ntlabati: "farmers get more special cartegory in our constitution than ordinary citizens" Take one wild guess as to why you should think that is, decides your racist argument of them being white....No? ok how about the fact that they provide food security, (i'd hate it if i was to depend on government run farms to provide my greens), Secondly they employ many people who work on the try and think of what will happen to those workers? Will they now be stationed at the neglected government cattle farm in which all cattle starved?

      Stephen Loate - 2012-09-14 12:31

well i guess we hare about the killing of a farmer that took place sometime last year for the mere fact that he was a farmer!!!

      benlloyd.roth - 2012-09-14 12:48

What are you saying? One life is more important than another? A father and a husband was killed. The murderers sentenced. To some extent justice was served. You should be happy. Bad people are off the street so you can sleep better at night.

let them rot forever ... these pieces of rubbish should never see daylight again

  • davorin.dobrovic - 2012-09-14 11:19

Ground floor! I read news24 just for the ignorant and self-righteous rants, so don't disappoint commenters!

      sarah.bouttell - 2012-09-14 11:36

hey now, don't forget to leave out the bigots, the racists, the religious zealots and all the other freaks who think that their race/religion/opinion are the only correct point of view. #mycountryisfilledwithmadmen.

  • dnxumalo2 - 2012-09-14 11:39

Here is one that sober people of South Africa must know and call me xenophobic if you like. Most farmers and black people of this country are killed by males from Mozambique and Zimbabwe. The reason why the perpetrators are not caught most of the time is because they do not have ids. Those people have stolen names and surnames of South Africans so they can fit in with communities.

      daniele.zanato - 2012-09-14 11:45

you are so right my friend but where do they get these stolen names of South Africans from?

      millionwatts1 - 2012-09-14 12:11

You are right to some point but SA jails are bursting to the sims with South Africans of ALL colour. So this shifting of blame and running away from the problem is only a feel good factor that doesn't help the reality.

  • Piet - 2012-09-14 11:50

These idiots should rot in jail. Unfortunately the farm killings will just go on and on....

  • thomas.g.loeser - 2012-09-14 11:50

We have lost all control. No morals, no direction, no Fu*k all. When there's f**k all left and no one to produce and or to feed them, they'll turn to the west or someone else for help - as it is happening all over Africa ( not good enough now - but good enough in time of need ) for AID,AID and more AID , that is all they know. What they don't know is that the so call saviours that are " helping " them now, will eat them up later.

  • Piet - 2012-09-14 11:53

I feel for Zelda and her Children.

  • whites.mustunite - 2012-09-14 12:38

@zimbabwe.river so you think that if somebody has worked their whole life to achieve more than you have, they should be killed for it?

      zambezi.river - 2012-09-14 12:56

@whites.......I doubt that many of u have done a full days job in ur entire lives.Black labour white guilt!

      whites.mustunite - 2012-09-14 13:02

You really are ignorant. Many of us do not employ black labour and the majority of us feel no guilt. Why should we? We are not the ones destroying this country.

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-09-14 13:04

Just another day in South Africa, once the land of milk and honey, now a hellhole of murder and mayhem.

  • majwarha.balakisi - 2012-09-14 14:10

    This guy owned 4 farms???

      wally.williams.148 - 2012-09-16 18:35

What does it matter how many farms he owned? That is exactly why farm murders do get so much publicity. It is a non-descript policy to create fear and confusion, a war on defenceless ppl coloured by the coating of crime in some instances. None of these farms were illicitly owned. Time that the greater populace are awakened to the fact that the so called stealing of land is a farce, a lie. All ppl of this worls moved about to populate it. All communities/clans/groups/tribes at one point or another took up land and yes land that "belonged" to someone else. That is how the world got shaped - communities/nations that is; how eventually borders were drawn. Wake up to the truth that there are politicians and policy makers out there that unscrupulously sell the idea that whites should be driven from farms/from mines/from business. Have you ever stopped and thought for a moment how these came to be; that no farm/mine/business simply rise and is sucessful; that nothing just fell into anyone's lap, bar some exceptions and obviously those built up over generations? In tribal culture, where does the wealth accumulate? The wealth is found in the hands of the tribal kings/leaders. The land, the ppl are subjects. The headman allocates land and it never becomes owned by the occupier. From the vast land available, why are there so few black farmers proper to date? Yet, there are some who are truly successful. The idea is to build capacity instead of destroying it; create new opportunities.

      wally.williams.148 - 2012-09-16 18:50

I am not defending "apartheid" and never will. I was not brought up that way. Remember that "apartheid" as prophesied refers to a period of 50 odd yrs. This is also a farce. We need to look at the history of our country over the span of almost a millennium. You cannot change that. It is not the "BOER" or "AFRIKANER" that is the cause of the hardship in this country - without denying the contribution many played - but from ALL sides the history was made and the country shaped. Politicians will make us believe what they want to as long as we allow them. There are ppl out there who are illiterate and many simply in a position that they crave something better. These ppl are influenced and manipulated to suit a handful and line the pockets of a few. Plz do a survey of (ALL) farmable land available v how much thereof are in the hands of whom; how much land are in the hands of tribal leaders; how much land is not distributed; how much mines are in the hands of whites - wholly owned by whites in SA - v companies or ppl outside SA; who hold shares in these mega-companies; who benefit from the proceeds of these; do the same wrt companies. Some interesting facts will emerse that the same politicians will NEVER tell you. Read about Marikana, and especially ALL the in's and out's about the share-holding and the beneficiary(ies) of LONMIN. Forget about the CEO, look deeper. Easy to blame the whites; easy to get the poor ppl to sit there with placards chasing whites out of SA. The truth?

      wally.williams.148 - 2012-09-16 18:55

We are played against each other and we allowed it for too long from all sides. While we devour each other and hatred escalates, who profits? Ppl are shot and killed and a race group is singled out. Slowly but surely the real truth is coming forward and those really responsible are silent and dragging the police and defence force into it, removing all resistance and any further leak of information. At the same time a real deal is closed with Zimbabwe and arms exported there...for what? Why do we contract over weapons with a country with NO record of human rights and NO sense of democracy? Sit for a while and think on these issues. God bless us all.
