Trio in court over road rage incident

2013-02-12 10:36

Johannesburg - Three men will appear in the Middelburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday following an alleged road rage attack in the town, Mpumalanga police said.

The trio handed themselves to the police and were released on R1 000 bail each, Lieutenant Colonel Leonard Hlathi said.

Ernest Hartzenberg, 23, Mossie Moss, 40, and Johnny van Eeden, 22, face charges of common assault and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

They allegedly attacked passengers in a minibus taxi and fired a paintball gun at them on Saturday.

The driver of the minibus taxi had apparently been driving recklessly, so one of the three accused, driving in a car, forced him to a halt.

The two drivers got out and started arguing. The car's driver called for help and his two co-accused came to his aid.

"When his backup arrived there was a fight that broke out between the group and the passengers in the taxi."

The three men had laid counter-charges of malicious damage to property and indecent assault.

IF FOUND GUILTY. I hope they really get what they deserve! Violence can not be tolerated!!

      Liz Smith - 2013-02-12 10:55

But dangerous driving with intimidation is fine?

      stan.luthuli - 2013-02-12 10:57

Liz please. don't spew BS!! Did I say that dangerous driving is fine? If the taxi driver is also found guilty. He must also face the consequences. Think before you litter your screen with nonsense!!!

      John - 2013-02-12 11:01

      Be specific Stan! Be specific.

      John - 2013-02-12 11:24

@stan...violence is the only thing they understand, no more shall law abiding drivers and pedestrians be pushed and bullied on our roads. Time to take a stand, time to fight fire with fire.

      caine.abel.75 - 2013-02-12 11:26

Stan dont be a Robert Mugabe

      dienaakte.waarheid.7 - 2013-02-12 11:30

volk members? - hahahaha....good to know you still know who your superiors get knotted...hippie.

      samuel.pienaar.7 - 2013-02-12 11:38

@Stan Practice what you preach. You would think that the amount of thumbs down you are getting should at least tell you that most people on here think your comments are actually nonsense. Reckless taxi drivers are responsible for so many accidents on the road and I think after this incident that taxi driver will think twice before driving like that again.

      Jane - 2013-02-12 11:55

Stan.luthuli, everyone is sick and tired of the taxi's. If one more cuts me off or stops dead infront of me in the middle of the main road, I might also be tempted to call some friends and sort him out. In this case I am not anti violence, we have all had enough of the taxi drivers disgusting behaviour!

      joumoer.mybroer - 2013-02-12 12:41

It's about time someone stood up against taxi drivers. For some or other reason they think they own the road. He should have bliksemed him harder.

      L.C.G001 - 2013-02-12 12:51

I had a taxi driver trying to hit my car with a knob kerrie a few weeks back when I hooted at him for cutting me off. He now knows not to bring a stick to a gun fight! Useless cockroach.

      mandla.khumalo.501 - 2013-02-12 13:01

You sound like a ranting taxi driver yourself. Or maybe you have family members who drive like maniacs and you are just jumping to their defense?

      LionLamb - 2013-02-12 13:54

oh yeah... well i got an aluminium base ball bat in my car, and i will break heads of any taxi driver that needs it. Especially this one driver in the southern suburbs... the fat a hole, drives like a maniac and flips the bird at anyone who dares to complain. If i see him again, i'm going to follow him and then break his knees! Then we'll see how brave he is to flip me the bird and swear in front of my children on the way to school!

  • koos.vandermerwe.75 - 2013-02-12 10:55

WOW wait a second! 3 vs 10 and they won? Love it!

      lelanie.prinsloo - 2013-02-12 10:59

Agreed! I wish I had the balls to smash some Taxi's! They try to intimidate and bully me regularly on the road but realise fast I am not your average white woman!!!!!

      dracolusus - 2013-02-12 11:06

Stan, when you have no more food cause all the farmers are gone. Think back at your attitude and weep.

      lelanie.prinsloo - 2013-02-12 11:06

@ Stan, you seem to forget that farmers feed the nation and that not only white farmers get killed. Typical, turn on your own kind. You are a stupid racists!!!

      toni.k.mcquillen - 2013-02-12 11:14

Taxi's are hazardous on the roads, not only to other road users but also for their passengers as well, I feel sorry for people who are forced to take this kind of transportation, they are putting their lives at risk climbing in a Taxi, I certainly wouldn't.

      koos.vandermerwe.75 - 2013-02-12 11:24

@stan.luthuli: Rejoiceing I am. They stood up for themselves and didn’t let that taxi driver drive all over them. They didn’t let him walk away because they were scared to take him on because he is black. You say whites attacked blacks. I say a man stood up and corrected a dangerous driver. It is you who turned into a race issue. BUT you must admit that Africans are very brave when the odds are heavily stacked in their favor. 3 vs 10 is very impressive. Have you ever been in a fight 1 vs 2. It is a very hard fight 1 vs 3 is almost impossible.

      John - 2013-02-12 11:30

@koos, 3 v 10 how about 1 v 31 Blood river 1840 No more shall law abiding citizens be pushed and bullied by outlaw thugs and gangsters.

      koos.vandermerwe.75 - 2013-02-12 11:36

@stan.luthuli: Well well wel. I just read the story in the local Middleburg newspaper. Innocent taxi driver, Innocent passengers where they!?!?! That should not have been a paintball gun. They should have pulled real guns. F’ing mongrels!!!!!!!!

  • Citroes - 2013-02-12 10:56

Wait for it... wait for it... Race trolls... AAAAAND GO!

  • gary.desousa.5 - 2013-02-12 11:07

The taxi driver was not arrested or do not hand himself in so that he can get bail too?? It takes 2 sides.

  • John - 2013-02-12 11:11

Three men arrest reckless inconsiderate driver. Driver resists arrest, passengers abet driver in resisting arrest, arrestors defend against assault, arrestors charged with assault. Sounds about right for our brilliant police. Get ALL the FACTS!

  • Arif.Akbar87 - 2013-02-12 11:13

I bet the whole thing was racial. It wouldnt have been so big if three black guys had to pull over a taxi and harrass the passangers. I've witnessed it been done with real guns in chesterville and chatsworth and it never hit the papers. But let three white guys stand up to a dangerous driver and they get attacked by 10 passangers and then get charged for it. Its a sick country we live in

      John - 2013-02-12 11:20

The driver was allegedly driving inconsiderately, the passengers had nothing to do with it but may have decided to intervene, thus escalating the incident to violence.

  • aspruyt - 2013-02-12 11:13

Read the full story and lock the taxi drivers and the occupants up.

      dienaakte.waarheid.7 - 2013-02-12 11:38

Get your head out of your backside zap - neither of those lived in the 17th century you uneducated ape. Try again.

The pressure of e-tolling already having a negative affect

  • epstander - 2013-02-12 11:26

They should see the beating of a Taxi driver as self-defense as they put lives in danger as soon as the wheels start to move. TAXI rolled just outside PE this morning on a long straight road. All this means is high speed and swerving in and out of lanes.

      zapadela.tistarocha - 2013-02-12 11:35

So you are an expert investigator whilst seated in your chair.............Well done.

      gawie.gorrel - 2013-02-12 11:53

@Zapdista I see you use a fake CV. They don't allow people like you at Harvard. Pretty cheap china! Well it comes through in your picture.

      Buzzbar - 2013-02-12 13:25

Zapa, you are a prime example of why anal sex should be made illegal.

  • oamis.lacadariedlac - 2013-02-12 11:33

Most taxi drivers are arrogant thugs, who break the rules of the road, and put other road users lives in danger, including their own passnegers....Until these taxi drivers are brought to task by the metro police, other drivers may be tempted to display their discontent

  • deon.louw.7505 - 2013-02-12 12:21

The losers of any fight usually runs to the cops first. The taxi driver might have been in more trouble if the other 3 landed up in hospital.

  • Frederick Edward Jaftha - 2013-02-12 12:22

guess the white race has neva been barbaric. tht they neva conquered any country or ppl or taken slaves 2 those they believe was lesser than themselves. History is littered with ur indiscretions and yes it is fact cant b erased from the minds of the oppressed blah blah wot is the issue the topic tht has every1 worked up bout. Tis has become racial nt bout morally right or wrong. We all knw bout the taxis yet we choose 2 use tis 2 express our anger and fear.

      koos.vandermerwe.75 - 2013-02-12 12:35

That might be so but the white race evolved. Now go read on what they did and how they sized themselves up against 12 year old girl. Go read what your holier than thou brothers did yet nothing is whispered about that here. It wasn’t just the taxi driver but the passengers as well. They just showed what they really are and when the man stood up all of a sudden they are the victims. PPFFF!

  • malcolm.stevens.129 - 2013-02-12 12:36

Violence is not the answer. BUT How do we get these taxi drivers to drive carefully and obey the rules of the road ?

  • peter.sabatha - 2013-02-12 12:47

people must learn how to defence themself.shoot the thugs in the my foot.this fools will get away with it.

  • paul.bester1 - 2013-02-12 13:33

I really hope they get off. Seems violence is the only language a taxi driver understands so kudos to you guys for standing up against them. The roads DO NOT belong solely to taxis.

  • richard.young.1253236 - 2013-02-12 14:45

The problem is that it doesn't solve that much and one can get into very big trouble. Like the guy at the racecourse who spilt a tiny bit of his brandy and coke on the president. It caused him huge legal and personal problems for years and didn't gain him anything. Errant taxi drivers need a snotklap, or prison time or both, but the affected driver is seldom the appropriate party to effect the sanction. Like Zimbabwe, we need a hangman.

  • steve.ritchie.739 - 2013-02-12 15:59

This is a result of the industry not being regulated. These days, anyone who owns an old Mazda, Opel Cub, Toyota Corolla, Honda Ballade, etc automatically qualifies to be a taxi. Guaranteed that just about all of these cockroach taxis and the majority of minibus taxis are not roadworthy or have PDP's and insurance to carry passengers. These taxi drivers just don't give a rat's butt for any other road user, let alone the safety of their passengers. The statistics speak for themselves.

  • ExecutiveTrend - 2013-02-12 16:06

Rather let go and don't get involved in road rage. It's degrading to fight like a Pit-bull terrier in the street. There are other ways to settle the dispute but, I can understand the frustrations of the drivers out there with the taxi drivers. I would have flipped out to.

  • eric.f.moloi - 2013-02-12 16:20

Taxis are a risk warrant,am a testimony to tht, majority of drivers have same attitude,we ride thm cos we dont have choice

  • John - 2013-02-12 17:42

Essentially we the travellers need to SEE our peace officers patrolling our roads. When I SEE a patrolling peace officer I really start behaving myself, how about you?

  • xolanit.ntuli.9 - 2013-02-13 08:01

When it comes to taxi drivers, I rest my case. But one day I stood my ground when he attempted to bully me. Luckily my wife wasn't on board, he stopped his taxi and came charging at me like angered cobra with stick. I got out and pulled my legal lethal weapon, he was static and dropped the stick and beg for messy.

  • gracemoremi - 2013-02-13 08:08

haha..lets all push these taxis off the road..the ones we always complain about. im gonna get a paintgun too!

  • vernon.samuel.7 - 2013-02-13 10:53

Let's look at a sport analogy. If a footballer commits a foul on another player, he is quite likely yellow-carded. If the other player retaliates, he is quite likely red-carded. Same concept applies here. If you retaliate, expect the consequences.
