2013-02-04 17:31

Johannesburg - A man accused of killing his mother, his sister, and 3-year-old niece appeared in the Cofimvaba Magistrate's Court on Monday, Eastern Cape police said.

He would be back in court on 11 February, when he was expected to bring a formal bail application.

He remained in custody, said Warrant Officer Namhla Mdleleni.

"It is alleged that the deceased, a 53-year-old woman, together with her daughter, 26, and her 3-year-old grandchild were sleeping in their home in the early hours on Friday... [the] accused entered the house allegedly stabbed and killed all of them," said Mdleleni.

His two other siblings, aged 15 and 17, escaped unharmed and alerted their neighbours in Deskea, Cofimvaba.

The police were called and the man was arrested.

The motive for the killing was not known.
