Bloemfontein - The Hertzogville Magistrate’s Court in the Free State was the scene of high drama on Thursday when a triple murder suspect suffered a possible stroke in the holding cells.

Johann Sonnenberg, 58, lost consciousness and could not be resuscitated, Netwerk24 reported.

His wife, Elena, and sister Christene were with him in the cell when he passed out. Officials rushed to the cells when they started screaming loud enough to be heard throughout the courthouse.

"We almost lost my brother," said Christene Sonnenberg.

"He really needed medical help, but the police just stood there."

Sonnenberg is facing triple murder charges after the bodies of three men were found on his farms in Hertzogville.

He was arrested in early March after a decomposed body and an unlicenced AK47 assault rifle were found on one of his farms.

Police then conducted a follow-up search on one of his other properties - Diamante Game farm - where the bodies of two other men were found.

Locals described Sonnenberg as reclusive and secretive.

Sonnenberg has undergone tests at a hospital in Kimberley to determine if he did have a stroke.

Sonnenberg’s trial has tentatively been postponed to 31 March, pending the outcome of his medical situation.
