Port Elizabeth - Eastern Cape DA leader Athol Trollip is confident he will be elected chairperson at the party’s federal congress this weekend.

"We don't take anything for granted. We have worked really hard," he told News24 on Friday.

"We believe we have secured enough to win."

He said his team would work until the campaigning deadline on Saturday night.

"Tomorrow [Saturday] is an important day to make contact with the delegates," Trollip said.

He is looking to succeed outgoing chair Wilmot James.

James is vying with parliamentary leader Mmusi Maimane and two other members, Adrian Naidoo and Morgan Oliphant, for the position of DA leader.

Trollip is competing against outgoing deputy chair Makashule Gana and MP Masizole Mnqasela for the post of federal chairperson.

The new leaders are expected to be announced on Sunday.
