Johannesburg - Two people were killed when a truck transporting an excavator overturned at Ngodwana in Mpumalanga, paramedics said on Friday.

"When ER24 paramedics and other services arrived on scene they found that the truck had jack-knifed. The cab of the truck was on its roof. The excavator was lying several metres away," said spokesperson Chitra Bodasing.

A man and a woman died on the scene while a third person sustained serious injuries, and another occupant was slightly injured.

"Fire and Rescue Services used the jaws of life and other rescue tools to extricate the occupants of the truck.

"The patient who sustained serious injuries and another who sustained minor injuries were treated and transported to hospital for further medical care."
